Members Luckyj
As I have stated I just moved back to the area and I am getting into the crappie, whites and stripers. I just purchased a Yellow Bird planer board, port side, to try this fishing method out. I have it all put together but what I am needing help with is the terminal tackle end of things. I m thinking in terms of for instance a Flicker Shad with a 2-3 foot leader and barrel swivel tied to the main line. Is this the proper tie up for them on a planer board? What about the rig for live bait either crappie minnows or live shad trolled with the board? Does the leader need to be longer? Shorter? I am using 10# mono main line but I have 20# flourocarbon leader from saltwater fishing. Is this a problem? It is a brand new 300 yard spool so don't really want to waste it but if it is a major problem will buy a smaller size. Any help you guys could give me would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to learn as much as I can.

1969Larson
Make sure to use a bead or other stop so the board doesn't slide down to the bait when you get a fish on.
Feathers and Fins
I typically put the bait 50 feet behind the board with a swivel and bead 5ft above the bait. If I find the fish especially fickle I employ a second rod to the board and the 50ft leader to the clip for a clean break away. Whenever you use a crankbait on a planer or just trolling you want to be sure it reaches maximum diving depth. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
Members Luckyj
Thanks for the tip on the bead! FF, so you are saying basically to let 50 feet of line out then attach to the board. So you are roughly trolling 40 feet behind the boat, with the board out to the side? And with the 2nd rod, you are saying attach BOTH rods to the SAME planer board? DId not know you could do that but works for me.
Feathers and Fins
Exactly what im saying.... There is other methods to do this but I don't want to get the Mast system or other variants of it as I don't run them enough to warrant it. But here is a Youtube to give you an Idea http://youtu.be/y1ZwLd2pBc4 https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
Ron Burgundy
Some Offshore inline planer boards would be much simpler. Gone but not forgotten Martin Ford
