Strike King King Kong - Will It Work As Wake Bait?

Bought the King Kong a couple weeks ago. Tried it a bit yesterday, but couldn't get it to wake. It wants to swim a couple inches under the water / just low enough that it won't throw a wake. Any suggestions? I'm throwing it on braid and an 8' Flippin' Stick type rod (it's my A-Rig Rod). I am headed to Table Rock next week and love to throw wake baits this time of year. Any advice is surely appreciated.

I haven't tried the Kong, but sounds like it wants to dive. Not trying to talk you into another bait, but I picked up a Jackall Mikey this year, it's similar to the Kong, but it does wake. I plan to fish it this spring. I threw it for a bit a couple of weeks ago and did get a hook-up on it. I did notice that at the start of the retrieve after a long cast, the Mikey is a little tricky to get waking, you have to start slow and get as much line off the water as you can (high rod tip). That was on mono, braid probably works better.

The Mickey requires an extra ling cast from my limited experience with it. I rarely tie it on but it's a producer if you get it far away from the boat. I watched a school of kentuckies beneath the boat in extra clear water one day and they wouldn't bite a thing or the Mickey. After I launched it away from the boat as far as I could sling it on a spinning rod, it got hammered on the 5th cast in the same area after about 10 seconds into the retrieve. You have to hold the rod tip high to wake it as I recall.

The Kong is a topwater bait isn't it? I wanted one years ago. Never didn fork out the cash for it. Of its a topwater bait, it should wake but I can't remember for sure.

The Red Fin is a great wake bait for bass. They can't stand it for some reason. Good for stripers too but on TR, that's not an issue as the population is low I hear.

Oh and you have to sing the Go Go's song "Hey Mickey" when you're throwing the Mickey.

I haven't thrown the kong either; but you may hav to fish it like some guys noted; rod tip high, line out of the water. Some wakers are fickle and don't like to truly 'wake' without that sort of input. Braid should help too.

Sometimes the jackall mickeys are tough to find used at a good price. Don't overlook the jackall dagored either. Basically a single joint Mickey.

Where can you find the King Kong bait? I've looked all over and can't find one.

The Kong bait is a swimmer, not a wake bait. They used to make one (might still) called a wake shad. It will run like a champ, until it breaks. That has been the downfall of the plastic joints on those SK swim/wake baits.

TW had some on clearance a while back.

Redfin, Buckeye lures makes one called a wake I believe that works well. Also a bomber long A will work. Not familiar with the king kong.

Check out the MS Slammer if you want a bigger wake bait. I'd suggest the 7" or 9" for Table Rock but they will certainly hit the 12" version also, just a lot more work casting it.

Never fished the Kong but they are a good looking bait.
