First Time On Tr

Recommended Posts

Coming to TR this weekend for 2 days fishing for first time with my 7 year old grandson. Never been on lake and don't have a clue where to start, coming from NWA, thought about Shell Knob area or Kimb City. Any advice where to start would be greatly appreciated. Whites would be prefect for Grandson, anything to keep his attention.

Thanks in advance.

Keep your eyes on this site. I see dtrs5kprs is back down from St. Louis; he will be posting reports daily and you can take what he says to the bank. You might want to look into getting yourself some Ned rigs and letting the boy drag those around. They will flat catch fish when nothing else will.

Good luck. I haven't been up there in a few weeks so I can't speak intelligently at this point. Maybe never, in fact. :)

Saint Louise? Gosh I hope not. My 'que is KC burnt ends all the way.

But yes, Champ nailed it, and Bill also showed it. If you get some Ned rig parts and get on some gravel or mixed rock out to 25' or so you will do fine, as will your grandson. If you drag them around on 6# line he will think he is fishing with KVD. Super easy way to fish, and great for kids.

We did not fish hard with all the cloud watching and dock ducking today and still managed 6 keepers with quite a few shorts. All on the little rig. If you are coming to Kimberling shoot me a PM, and I can likely make some parts appear for you.

I fished a very small section of the the lake Saturday, where the Kings flows into the main channel. We went to the back of a couple creeks and caught fish flipping bushes and laydowns. If you find some water running into the dirtier stuff I believe you'll find some bass. I'm sure there's other ways to catch them right now, but I love flipping and it was working Saturday.

Have not seen a ton of 7yr. olds that can flip bushes, but maybe? I think at that age I would look for a bluegill bite as much as anything. Holding the attention of a child that young is more than a problem. He for the most part cares little about the size of the fish it is the number of bites he can get. If it were a girl it would be way different as the patients factor is times 10 over the boys at that age.

Get a box of worms and have at it.

Good Luck

Dang it, I knew you were a KS guy, Dave. Not sure where St. Louis came from. Apologies. :)

I'm not touching this KS vs. MO thing, SOX. Not now, not ever. Got way too many of our own troubles down here. :noway:

I'd much rather be in MO than KS any day. As long as it is not St Louis.

There are plenty of brown fish to keep a little one occupied around 13. Good ones and ten inchers. Might have to cast for him depending on his skills, but they are thick. Flipping would be a bit much, but I have still not seen bushes that made me get excited about the big rod and line. The bushes I saw today that had enough water in them were in water clear enough to see bottom 6' down.

Most of our fish today were on subtle changes on flat gravel, or in brushpiles on flat gravel. A few early on were around bigger docks.
