stlfisher Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 the ties are one of the reasons its hard for me to watch soccer. Why not just go with the first team to score in OT wins? US and Germany could agree to tie the next game and they would both advance. Any sport with this possibility has problems. And whats up with the cards? Yellow card, red card? Could you imagine if Wainwright beaned a guy and instead of giving a warning the ump pulled out a yellow card? WTF? But the worst part of soccer has to be the clock. Clock's in sports count down, not up. I'd like to know when the game will be over, not when the ref would like it to end. When a player is injured, or flopping around acting like they are injured, just blow a whistle and stop the darn clock. Seems to work in other sports. I'll continue to watch our boys for no other reason than my undying patriotism, but I'm far from ordering the MLS channel anytime soon. The reason they don't play overtime is goals are a premium and usually very hard to come by. You could potentially play another 45 or maybe even 90 minutes. Each team is only allowed 3 subs. Unless they change the substitution rules for overtime or begin taking players off the field to create more space and scoring chances... then just playing an overtime in any kind of tournament is almost impossible. Guys would drop over from exhaustion and it would affect your next game. Most of the starters are running 8-12 kilometer's a game. As far as the cards yellow is = a warning (like in baseball) and a red is an ejection and suspension (like in baseball). It is quite similar to other sports...just different terms. We have yellow flags in football which I am sure many outside the United States think is weird.
Justin Spencer Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 I'm with Batcab on the clock, why in the world do they do it that way? Seems like some bribery could occur to let the game continue a few more minutes. Other than the clock thing and people being taken off on a stretcher for a kicked shin, the game is what it is. I enjoyed playing it but don't enjoy watching it. Don't have a problem with anyone who likes it, to each his own, it is undoubtably a great event for the world, hate that we choked the last one away, I'm sure it was exciting to watch at the end. ness Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 Whatever the pros or cons aare of the sport itself, it sure has reached a new level of popularity in the US. Especially so in Kansas City. Sporting KC has been extremely successful, both in their performance but also in filling seats and all the other things that go along with a well-run sports franchise. There's a ton of buzz around town on this World Cup, and the Power and Light district, in particular, is packing them in for the games. John
