ScottK Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 Someone posted this link on another forum the other day, some good stuff on classic flies. http://traditionalflies.com/index.php?flies
Wayne SW/MO Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 When i was much , much younger my favorite, and most productive fly was the Black Ghost. I can't say I caught anything of impressive size, but I caught a lot of bass on them. If I remember right the pattern then had a jungle cock eye. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Big Brown Trout Posted June 20, 2014 Author Posted June 20, 2014 I couldn't agree more. Have you ever tied or fished Tups Indispensable? It a wonderful combination of history. simplicity, and effectiveness. I haven't yet, but I have tied some up similar with partridge hackle and gold rib. I basically was considering them as hairs ears soft hackles. I tied two in gray and two in olive (which look great in olive btw). When i was much , much younger my favorite, and most productive fly was the Black Ghost. I can't say I caught anything of impressive size, but I caught a lot of bass on them. If I remember right the pattern then had a jungle cock eye. yeah I'm pretty sure it does call for it. I prefer the Grey Ghost myself and have caught a lot of trout with that, but lots more with other flies this year. my big ones this year have been Olive Matukas, Grey Ghost, Royal Coachman, and March Browns. As far as trout go these four flies are all I have used. ( and done well with judging by my freezer). Let the summer of Carp, begin.
Nighthawk Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 The Grey Ghost always catches trout for me at night on Taney. I went through a phase where I only used classic streamers; Black Ghost, Black nosed dace, Mickey Finn, Colonel bates. etc. Then I used only old English wet flies, 3 on a leader. Caught the crap out of trout on all of them.
Big Brown Trout Posted June 25, 2014 Author Posted June 25, 2014 yeah i'm somewhere between the two phases myself right now, certainly more effective than dry fly fishing, for me. yeah I noticed that as the light gets low the trout either ignore the grey ghost or knock the crap out of it. Let the summer of Carp, begin.
3wt Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 So what's the fishing method? Down/across swing? Just below the surface?
Ham Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 Fly fishermen over complicate things??? NEVER! Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
jdmidwest Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 Anything will catch a trout, I once saw one take a cigarette butt floating by in a hatch. Simple wet flies have been replaced by woolies and others. Streamers have changed alot too. But the old patterns caught fish then and they should do it now too. Maybe more so now as they don't see them all of the time. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
Big Brown Trout Posted July 31, 2014 Author Posted July 31, 2014 Maybe more so now as they don't see them all of the time. My thought exactly. Let the summer of Carp, begin.
