yaknar Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 My shuttle driver, wife, went out of town, so I decided to try Springfield Lake. This was only my second time on the lake and I dont know where to fish or what to fish with. I put in before the sun came up in the fog. I knew there were pads so I bought a weedless frog and caught my first bass on it, last two pictures. When I got home I did trim the legs, haven't bent the hooks yet.. Its nice throwing a lure in heavy cover without worrying about hang ups. I had no takers on buzzbaits or swimbaits, and caught the rest on crankbaits. When the sun came up the bite stopped. I caught a handful, took pictures of a few, hard to take pictures in the dark, and released them all...
Mitch f Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 Those are very nice fish, but you need to work on holding up BASS correctly so it doesn't damage the fishes jaw "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
aarchdale@coresleep.com Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 after they choke down a mouth full of trebles lets concentrate on not hurting their mouth
wuteversbitin424 Posted June 20, 2014 Posted June 20, 2014 Well i agree with what they are saying but i also think an explanation of why would be useful. when holding a bass i like in the picture all the bass' weight is centered soley on it jaw wich is. extremely fragile. it doesn't take much at all to dislocate their jaw or worse tear it completely thus crippling it wich will likely be the cause of its demise. pro bass anglers are terribly bad about doing this and what's worse the bigger the fish the easier it happens. Doing this is equivalent to turning us sideways and holding us up by our arm over our head. our shoulder would for sure break. all fish can be liped but should be held verticaly and as shortly as possible. and the best way is to hold by wrapping your hand around the belly and holding under the fins.
marcusearlt Posted June 20, 2014 Posted June 20, 2014 Hey man good for you. I haven't had much luck on frogs but I'm glad you caught some. It's always a good deal when you catch fish at a new place with a new lure or new technique. "If people don't occasionally walk away from you shaking their heads, you're doing something wrong." yaknar Posted June 21, 2014 Author Posted June 21, 2014 Thanks for the comments. Marcusearlt, I agree. I fish mainly the rivers, so I dont know if I will throw it much. I already have a go topwater lure. Dont know much about frogs. I was missing the popping sound, so I found a small popping frog, might make a difference , might not. I did find one with interchangeable legs.
marcusearlt Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 Ya ever since I moved to NWA I'm primarily a river guy now too. But hey that frog with interchangable legs is pretty cool. I see a lot of guys throwing frogs on heavy action rods with 40+ braid. I dont event own anything with over 12lb line and those set ups barely get used. Now if were in Texas/Florida I'd be froggin all the time. You going back out this weekend? "If people don't occasionally walk away from you shaking their heads, you're doing something wrong." yaknar Posted June 22, 2014 Author Posted June 22, 2014 No, not this weekend. I fish with three light action 5 ft poles, with 8lb mono line.
John Andrews Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 If you are ever out there and see my kayak ( look for the "sharks teeth" on the front ) I'd be happy to show you around. I have several spots where I find some real good top water action. I have noticed over the last three years the fishing is slowing down there. With Wally Word selling 200 dollar kayaks, the amount of people fishing there now has exploded. A lot of these folks are keeping their catch. This small lake soon wont be able to support the pressure. I catch and release EVERY fish. I often wonder if just for 2 years everyone did the same, how much better the fishing would be. Heck it's beyond me why anyone would eat something caught in the quality of water. Hope to see ya out there LATER
jbooth24 Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 I also catch and release all the bass out of springfield lake. I have caught some nice size ones out there. I used to see some nice ones jump out of the water but not as much anymore as I did two years ago
