Not a bad drive from Neosho and it is absolutlety one of the most beautiful rivers in the ozarks - right up there with the Current and Buffalo. The major difference being that the North Fork has clearer water and less people, if that sort of thing interests you...

Johnsfolly Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 I'm trying to catch a trout in all of the MDC recognized trout waters. I fished Crane back in Feb with a lot of luck catching pickerel and minnows, but I broke off two trout with one of them being at least 14 inches in length (see the picture of the hole where I lost it). So this creek haunts me. I live in Columbia and have yet to return for another try. Does Crane get a good hopper or terrestrial bite in the summer? I have seen firsthand how spooky these trout can be and want to try with a dry and a nymph dropper if possible. I fished the upper end of the MDC CA. Would there be any better spots further down stream that would hold some deeper/cooler water?

2sheds Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 Stealth is much more important than your choice of fly. Good conditions last Sunday (Aug 3) - water was plenty cold throughout. I enjoy fishing each of the 3 sections - each offers something different. Special thanks to Dad (for the 2-wt rod & reel), Tim (who warned me to tread lightly), Brian (who shared the fly-of-the-day), and Jason (who talked me into trusting my feel without a strike indicator).
Johnsfolly Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 2Sheds - Nice fish. The reason I've asked about the hopper bite is that I'm thinking about using a hopper fly with a nymph dropper. As spooky as they were the last time I fished it, I want to use something more "natural" as an indicator. i may try to get back down there the 28th or 29th of Aug.
2sheds Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 I believe a hopper would be fine in many sections of Crane. The fish seem to roam the larger pools and I think they see everything in the water. When I was sight casting, I did find a highly visible difference from removing my strike indicator while fishing nymphs. Strikes were strong enough to feel - no problem.
Lancer09 Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 Not many places where a dry and a dropper would work. I would fish any area with the hopper and follow up woth a nymph. they do like hoppers down there.
