Members yeehaw Posted June 21, 2014 Members Posted June 21, 2014 So I have fished Taney for years and never had trouble catching trout. I've got two newbies with me and we fished from noon to six. We threw jigs, brown and white both, straight line and under floats. We threw spinners, flies, power eggs, nightcrawlers, trout magnets, everything I could think of. Anybody have any ideas for tomorrow because today was my worst day on Taney ever. Basically fishing from lookout to the landing out of a pontoon and wont be using a flyrod. Any help is appreciated because I'm clueless.
Members Stevan Posted June 21, 2014 Members Posted June 21, 2014 Wow! Sounds slow, but here's a few things that have worked for me using a spinning rod. First of all, if you haven't already, spool up with 2# green or moss colored line. I like Maxima. Above Fall Creek I'd throw sculpin jigs and gold Kastmasters toward the bluff banks from Lookout down. Work them slowly and review Phil's short film on the forum regarding jig fishing. Also, try dragging different colored egg flies on the bottom. My favorite color is light orange or salmon. Below Fall Creek continue with the jigs and lures as above, but also try a half worm below one white gulp egg. One white gulp egg combined with an orange or pink egg. Also, try a small treble hook with orange Power Bait, especially in the area of Fall Creek marina. Stop by Lilley's as they will have any supplies you need and will be able to give you advice on what may be working best today. Most important if you haven't already done it, 2# green or moss colored line. Good Luck and have fun! Wish I was there.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted June 21, 2014 Root Admin Posted June 21, 2014 Our water is now as clear as it gets. And trout are leery. Some of our guides are going to 7x which is 1-pound tippet. We used 6x fluorocarbon yesterday and caught fish. We were using jig and float. Micro or marabou jig as small as you can buy. Olive worked for Babler yesterday BUT we're dropping a Zebra Midge below the jig 18 inches using, again, 6x fl tippet. If you want more strikes, use 7x. No wind most of the day yesterday which makes it all that much harder. If you're using a ZM - Leave It! Bump it may be every 15 seconds. Move it after a minute. Depth- set it at half the depth of the water. We caught fish half way to Lookout to past the Narrows yesterday. Fished from 8:30 - 11 am. Not great but boated 18 rainbows between the 3 of us. The ZM caught most of the fish but I did use a #12 gray scud under a float, making sure the scud was dragging the bottom and working it so that the scud was crawling across the gravel. Bite was slight so had to really watch the indicator. Zebra Midge- caught them using a red, black and rusty, #14 or #16. P&P didn't work at all. Caught a nice brown last evening below Fall Creek on white jig as the water was dropping out. I was in between rain storms- above me and below me on the lake. Only reason I stopped there for 15 minutes.
Members BIG K Posted June 21, 2014 Members Posted June 21, 2014 when all else fails with water on i drift an egg and scud combo in the trophy zone. water off an inflated night crawler above short creek around some of the big trees that lay on the bottom in that area good luck
Members yeehaw Posted June 23, 2014 Author Members Posted June 23, 2014 Thanks for the tips gentlemen. After rethinking my predicament, I remembered I jumped from downtown to the trophy area and never focused on the fall creek to trout hollow stretch. Hit the channel side with jigs, tossed up shallow and twitched into deeper water. Every hit came on the big fall into deeper water. White and brown both worked and we picked up bites on nearly every cast. Fished lower end of trophy area in the morning with yellow egg patterns and did well also. I figured out depth was my problem in the trophy area, wasn't fishing deep enough. Started watching where the fish were feeding in the water column and started picking up more fish. Had to keep readjusting our depths as we noticed the fish changing theirs. Saturday was a massive improvement over Friday. Thanks for the tips guys.
Ham Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 Nothing heavier than 2 lb test line! They'll eat jigs on 6 lb for me or I won't catch them. Full Disclosure: I have not banged my head against the no generation wall at Taney very often, but I caught them when I did. I sight fished individual fish along a bluff. I threw the jig ahead of them and would pop it up off bottom in fron tof them when they got close. I only got a few before generation started, but they were all nice. Taney and the White River below BSL are two very different animals. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
