Members danop69 Posted June 23, 2014 Members Posted June 23, 2014 Started the day at 0500 and went straight over to Schooner creek to scout some topwater action. Threw the fin for about some swim baits til about 7 or so with no takers. Had a few blow up but that's it. Not really much activity on top to speak of but did manage one short LM on a jig. Went over to Mill Creek fished a grub and jig sittin in 30 throwing up to 15 in gravel with nothin to show. Shot across the cove and fished a bluff wall with some pole timber and caught a couple of LM and a spot. Biggest was 14 3/4. Decided to head over and fish a couple of deep water docks with only one more fish. Called it a day at 10:30. All LM and spots for 5 total. No brown fish to be seen. Tough day all in all. Have to retool tomorrow and try something different. Did throw the little rig a bit but maybe not enough. Probably try more of that tomorrow. By the way did walk down to our dock last nite to try out a couple of new fins and Andy caught a nice 4 lb or so LM on a gr pump/ orange Ned that got us pretty fired up. Hope you all had a better day that us. We'll definitely be back out at 5 am. Good fishin, Dan

Quillback Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 Thanks for the report - what the heck is going on with the TW bite? It stinks when it doesn't happen.
Members danop69 Posted June 23, 2014 Author Members Posted June 23, 2014 Wish I could tell ya Quill. Out right now and didn't even try this morning.
dtrs5kprs Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 Think you are out a little deep for the brown fish. Get on some gravel and put about 20' max under you, then give the little rig a fling. Should be better.
merc1997 Bo Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 sounds as though there needs to be some time looking to see where all the bait is. i know many time we get in the habit of fishing spots and do not catch anything and then wonder what is going on with the fishing. i have found over the years for even someone like me that night fishes all the time, that there has to be some time spent looking the lake over a bit to see where the majority of the shad are at. this will help in fishing the right areas. i have not bee on the lower end of the lake for a while, but here on the upper end, a lot of the bait is still back in the coves and arms a ways. as the water continues to warm, the bait and bass will continue to move out towards main lake. i also feel that there are many bass that are just following around shad pods and never get near the bank or bottom. bo

Never saw a single big ball of shad, and very few hanging on the roll offs or edges/ends of the runout points. Toward the end of last week as temps increased there were more shad working off those places but not tightly bunched. About Thursday we started seeing some fish spitting shad. Even then most of them were still glued to the bottom with craws sticking out of them. It's a funny year.

Scattered bait = scattered bass.
dtrs5kprs Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 He speaks the truth. Scattered bait = scattered bass. And there are just buckets of craws all over. Not sure they are even concerned much about shad yet. We were still catching spots and blacks up on the banks full of craws last week. Dock fish we caught were not on the "summer" deeper docks. To me those are the docks you would flip a spoon in, with as much as 50-80' on the ends. Better docks were shallow, maybe 15'-20' on the ends. Fish on those were either shallow, especially on jet ski floats and walkways, roaming around the sides about halfway up the docks, or roaming off the ends. Did not really catch any up in slips. There are some better brownies down in wood or pole timber on points, out to 20' or so. Very tight to wood, very subtle bite (if even noticed), and very slow. Most of the fish caught like that measured, and some were nicer keepers. Was too slow for the kids though, at least in terms of bites. And really for my tastes as well. More or less putting the little rig vertically down the trees. With some wind those same fish will roam around the wood a bit, but still not what you would call aggressive.
Members danop69 Posted June 23, 2014 Author Members Posted June 23, 2014 He speaks the truth. Scattered bait = scattered bass. So true. We just got in from this morning an we have not seen balls of bait anywhere yet but have seen them scattered about. Saw a few here and there swimming on top while fishing but that was it. We went to completely diffenernt areas to look for more fish and found some on main lake bluff ends with pole timber. A little better than yesterday but not by much. Caught most of our fish swimming a smoke grub and one on a hula jig. Was overcast all day which I thought would help but not so much other than we went sweating and were very comfortable a morning. Did go out to fish a main lake hump and saw scattered fish. Caught 2 there with one spot and a brown fish on a fin believe it or not. It was a light rain at the time so just decided to head in for a bit then take the kids out for a while this afternoon. All in all, only 8 fish total with a mixture of LM, spots and brownies with only two keeps being small jaws about 16" each. Still have 4 more days to figure something out. Thanks for the input. Good fishin! Dan
