skeeter Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 OK, I have a witness so I'm not making this up......last night we were watching the usual parade of boats returning from the Kimberling City fireworks pass by the place. Actually there weren't as many as in previous years this time. So the water traffic was passing from our right to our left straight out in front of us which means we saw a red (portside) nav. light followed by a white anchor light...right ? Around the point comes a boat also moving right to left and all we could see was a green light (should be starboard, right-side or driver's side) followed by the white anchor light. We sat there trying to figure out what in the heck was going on and all we could come up with is somebody had removed the two-color, bow-mounted light fixture to replace a light bulb and then re-installed it bass-ackwards !! If that wasn't bad enough, the driver makes a 180 degree turn and heads back down-lake in the opposite direction as the returning multitudes and THEN we saw the red light showing on the right side of the boat !! Guess there's a first time for everything !
Old plug Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 Skeeter. They get pinched for that every weekend here on LOZ. I was sitting on my deck the other night and this boat was coming along with a row of green lights on the side. There was a tall white anchor light light standing up in back . I was also trying to figure out there the red were. he turned and then I could see his bow running light and the white light was in the proper place. It turns. put this idiot had a sting of green lights hanging on his right side and another big string red ones hanging on the left. We have another guy who regularly boats at night on the weekends and turns on 4 FOUR docking lights he has mounted on his bow of his pontoon. It is so bright the water shins for a long ways ahead. It will light up other boats like day. You cannot even see any of his running lights but they are on. I have seen him turn off the others Its actually blinding. I was told by someone he is really scared out there at night. So he says he needs those lights.
Champ188 Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 I was told by someone he is really scared out there at night. So he says he needs those lights. If he's that scared he doesn't need to be out there. Gonna end up causing someone else to wreck by blinding them.
Members motexan Posted July 7, 2014 Members Posted July 7, 2014 This didn't happen in Missouri (Lake Conroe) but it's another good reminder to be extra careful when fishing at night. http://www.houstonchronicle.com/neighborhood/woodlands/news/article/Lake-Conroe-boat-collision-leaves-3-dead-5596811.php
GNSfishing Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 I have been out at night and yes they do not belong on the lake. I have had to shut down until they pass because of being blinded and losing my night vision for awhile. It is too dangerous to other boaters at night. What is the law on those lights on boats at night???
bfishn Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 ...What is the law on those lights on boats at night??? In Missouri; All vessels shall display from sunset to sunrise the following lights when under way, and during such time no other lights, continuous spotlights or docking lights, or other nonprescribed lights shall be exhibited: (1) Vessels of classes A and 1: (a) A bright white light aft to show all around the horizon; (b A combined light in the forepart of the vessel and lower than the white light aft, showing green to starboard and red to port... I can't dance like I used to.
bfishn Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 I got run up on a mud bar one night on Bull years ago when I met a pair of gig boats running side by side with their gigging lights on, coming into the back of E Sugarloaf while I was coming out. From my position it looked like a freaking airplane landing with the pair of high intensity lights several feet above the water and 50 feet apart. To their credit, the folks in the gig boats helped me get off the mud and accompanied me back to the ramp. I never mentioned that their lights were what put me there. I can't dance like I used to.
Old plug Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 YEAH he has no business out there at night. He is not the only one. There is. a a multitude of them. As you get older it becomes harder to see at night. that is the reason I no longer fish at night. I have wave runners running around here after dark all weekend long. I know someone that has a powerful 38 ft bow rider. He never owned. a boat in his life. He is scared of it. He admits none of this but its very clear he is really intense on the water. He only takes it out a few rimes a year. I have been out riding with him. He is careful to the point of being dangerous. Wakes really scare him. I seen a boat patrolman out last evening again. WOW. Second time since last Wednesday. Someone told me the Coast Guard was here in the dove for awhile conducting mandatory safety inspections but nothing about anything else. At one time they were deputized and could arrest when they were here.
skeeter Posted July 7, 2014 Author Posted July 7, 2014 Several direct and indirect posts on this thread and the other "be careful" thread were wondering where our State Highway Patrol, Water Division were over the weekend ? Can't say that I laid eyes on a single one in the Baxter area but Thurs., 7/3, afternoon about 2ish we crossed the KC bridge and there were about four of them with lights flashing on one side of the narrows at the bridge conducting what I assume was a "sobriety checkpoint" stopping almost every boat that came along. You really can't take your eyes off the road going over the bridge but my better half spotted them as did some other folks we met up with.
Members carpelpummel Posted July 7, 2014 Members Posted July 7, 2014 On the water patrol portion of the above reply, we too were at Baxter all weekend and never saw a one, we asked the marina about it and they told us they were actually out on several unmarked wave runners hitting the coves. I haven't heard of this before but just passing on what we were told
