Quillback Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 I was stinking it up today, 2 bass total. Both came on a Strike King Structure Bug fished on a wobble head. One was a nice healthy 2 lb. LM and the other a 13" spot. Got the LM on a bluff wall and the spot in some wood. Also lost a good fish, looked to be 4 lbs. or so, that hit the Structure Bug off the back corner of a dock. Had that fish on for maybe 5 seconds, and then it jumped at least 3 feet into the air and threw the hook. There was some mid-channel top water activity early, but the fish were scattered and moving around, had a couple of slaps at a Spook, but just couldn't stay with the fish. Might be time to use something like a spoon that can be cast a long ways and ripped back. Most of the fish I am seeing out there look small, which can be explained by the small shad. There are a lot of shad out there, but they are only an inch or so long. First time I've fished the Structure Bug - it has good action, but like most Strike King plastics it is very fragile. Get a bite and it's likely one of the appendages will get pulled off. Bluegill pull them off also. Catch a bass on one and it's pretty much destroyed. Water temp 82.
Fish24/7 Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 you'll have better luck next time, I've had some luck on Bull with a tiny torpedo for those schooling fish, it's about the same size as those little shad are. A spook might not "match the hatch" right now.
Quillback Posted July 22, 2014 Author Posted July 22, 2014 Tiny Torpedo - good idea. I think I may have one stashed away somewhere.
jmes Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 The structure bug has been a excellent trailer for me. I've been using it as a trailer behind a jig, but I've been using it on Stockton and Pomme and having great success. Haven' tried it on the Rock yet maybe in a few weeks. Tough day but at least you got to go. Thanks for the report
Guest Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 I haven't fished TR in a couple years, but a jigging spoon & drop shot would be my starting point, especially deeper docks
Sac River Jim Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 i been chasing the schooling fish around with a spoon with some success. I've been using a 1/2oz white jigging spoon Ray Duncan makes here in Mt. Vernon.

I may have to break out the spoon, I'm not a big fan of spoon fishing, but desperate times call for desperate measures.

Quill what ive been seeing is scattered fish all over several acres mostly over the main channel swings. With that 7'10'' rod i bought the other day i can fling that spoon half way across the lake at em. i've sat on top of suspended fish and fished it vertically and notta but sometimes when i swim it back thru them i can pick a fish or two up.
