moguy1973 Posted August 14, 2014 Posted August 14, 2014 Has anyone ever tied a hair jig on a large hooked jig head (like a 1/4-3/8oz with weed guard) that imitates a 4" tube jig? I was thinking a marabou or deer hair tipped jig with a thick chenille for the body like this one might look something like a tube does in the water. Not sure it would have the same action though. Thoughts? This would be for red ribbon stretches of trout water like on the Meramec when you would rather be fishing for smallies where you can't use plastics. -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
Guest Posted August 14, 2014 Posted August 14, 2014 Ive done it with rabbit fur, the 1/4oz turns out to be a walleye delight.
Mitch f Posted August 14, 2014 Posted August 14, 2014 Just use a bou tube, only tie marabou on the end of a tube jig hook. Cut off the tubes tenicles and the marabou replaces them. Works extremely well. "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
MOsmallies Posted August 14, 2014 Posted August 14, 2014 I recently saw an article where someone inserted a hair jig or crappie marabou jig into the cavity of the tube to act as the tube jighead. I though this was a cool idea and would have great action. The soft plastic tentacles and hair... best of both worlds. This would really only work with small 2.75" tubes though. I may try this combo this winter. I know this doesn't help with red ribbon regulations, but it's something different the fish haven't really seen.

Would the rubber body of the tube be legal in the red ribbon areas? -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
Feathers and Fins Posted August 14, 2014 Posted August 14, 2014 I did it years ago playing around with a crappie tube.. I did ties a clouser that was oversized then slipped a tube up as far as I could then pulled tube forward and added some deer hair under where the tube whould lay. it gave it good body girth and natural feel... Hope that made since. It worked great on stocked rainbows. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
Wayne SW/MO Posted August 14, 2014 Posted August 14, 2014 That would be the Doll fly, around for ever. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
