Quillback Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 Yep I agree, Notre Dame is always given the benefit of the doubt when it comes to rating.
stlfisher Posted October 13, 2014 Author Posted October 13, 2014 I agree as well. I also think Ole Miss is overrated....they had a nice fourth quarter, but Alabama controlled that game until the end and I am not sure how good Alabama is. Mississippi State looks pretty darn good right now.
Chief Grey Bear Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 You guys are learning something most SEC fans already know. This is the toughest conference in football, Yeah, thats all we hear. I think Mizzou was the SEC East champs last year. Only second year in the badass conference. Texas AM has more than held their own. Not bad for two teams that were to be dominated for the foreseeable future in the toughest confrence. Seems like the SEC powerhouses keep ending up in the L column. Alex Heitman Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 I'm all for the SEC but I really miss the Big 12 and all the rivalry games we had on both football and basketball.

We've seen the extreme positives and negatives of that in equal measure in our 2.5 years in the conference so far and there's really nothing left to learn. We're just not very good this year, so we're taking some bad losses. IU isn't an SEC team and they took us down. Actually, we're in a total crap division this year. If we were even decent we'd have a shot to win it. Even Uga's pretty mediocre, as much as we made them look like an NFL team Saturday.
Al Agnew Posted October 14, 2014 Posted October 14, 2014 That's part of it, but he also can't stand back there all day long. He was horrible.I still think you're focusing way too much on the qb. For one thing, he DIDN'T stand back there all day long. At times he bolted the pocket before it was completely collapsed, but on most of those pass plays he simply didn't have much time before it collapsed. But more to the point, every time they showed the wide view replay, NONE of the receivers were open. The Georgia guys were on them like glue, and you have to also question their route running, or else the Georgia coaches had the Mizzou plays down pat, because the defenders seemed to just go to the same place the receivers' routes took them. And the coaches have to shoulder some of the blame, because with the pass rush Mauk was getting there were way too few plays like screens and quick slants, and way too many slow developing plays where every receiver went way downfield.
stlfisher Posted October 14, 2014 Author Posted October 14, 2014 I think our first possession in the second half we threw two quick slants in a row. The second one was the one Hunt tipped resulting in an interception. We didn't go back to that at all. There is just way too much inexperience on offense right now. I think we need to run the ball more. DGB and Morgan Steward really hurt this team and we just don't have the depth.

Not really focusing too much on the QB, I understand this game very well. Yes the pocket collapsed and that's when he needed to make some better decisions. Don't force it and don't run around waiting for somebody to be open. Throw it away or take off running. But I do agree that the blame should fall on the coaching. Not just some of the blame but most of it.

The quick slant or quick passes should be our bread and butter of the passing game. With as little time as Maty was getting these are a lot better bet. I went back and watched some of the pass plays and his off side receivers were open some but he didn't have time to progress through his reads before he was flushed from the pocket or it collapsed. Line did a really crummy job. Gonna have a tough time if our line can't pass block nor run block very good! "Pretty soon we may not have any rights left because it might infringe on someone's rights"

Line did a really crummy job. Gonna have a tough time if our line can't pass block nor run block very good! It was really interesting reading the interview with Henson. He basically touched on many of the things we have all been saying while not trying to pile on Mauk. 1) Mauk's height is not a problem 2) He leaves the pocket to quick 3) We need to block better, but Maty needs to handle the pressure better. 4) There were receivers open, but it is hard to find them when your scrambling. So basically the big issue is Maty and his pocket presence. He is gonna have to take some licks to make some plays. I wonder if they should just simplify the playbook and take 10 pass plays with similar formations and run them for one half and then change it up to another set at half time. Keep it simple for Maty and build from there. He looks like he is thinking instead of just reacting.
