Members cerckson Posted September 1, 2014 Members Posted September 1, 2014 I am looking for a good spincast reel for my wife. I just bought her a cheapo zebco 22 from academy on friday. Of course she picks up the first pink reel she seen. Used it on friday afternoon. Worked good for her. Went out today and the darn thing wont cast. Taking the 22 back in the morning. Just looking for some good opinions on a good spincast reel. Any and all input will be greatly appreciated. <img src="<a data-ipb='nomediaparse' href='http://i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/cerickson1978/DSCN3005_zpsdc76c1e1.jpg'>http://i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/cerickson1978/DSCN3005_zpsdc76c1e1.jpg"</a>alt="DSCN3005_zpsdc76c1e1.jpg"> Just an ole construction worker that likes to tractor pull. blacknoseddace Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 Shimano makes good reliable reels. Even the lower end shimano reels are pretty good. I use the shimano symetre and I love it.
fishinwrench Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 Get her a decent pink SPINNING reel (and rod) and scrap the spincast gear. If she truly cares to fish at all then she can learn to use spinning gear in 15 minutes. If she doesn't then just buy her a good book to read.

Took me just a few minutes to teach my 15 year old daughter to use one correctly and her response was "why didn't you let me start using one of these from the beginning". About 5 minutes later she had her little sister using one. Now their mom is a different story! Â Â
Unimog Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 If you're dedicated to the spincast, the only ones I've even seen besides the zebco are some made by daiwa.
fishinwrench Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 Very few "quality" spincast reels exist because the initial Design of their Operation/function was an idea that should have been scrapped 40 years ago. Wasn't it originally the brainstorm of someone who was bored at a bomb factory ?
Sac River Jim Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 i agree with wrench on the spinning reel but if like was said above if your set on a spincast i picked up a bps extreme spincast up at the outlet store for 25 bucks awhile back and gave it to one of my crappie fishing buddies wanting to learn to bass fish. he used it a couple times while he practiced with a baitcaster. he did pretty well with it but the gear ratio is pretty low. Seemed like it took him forever to reel a fish in lol!!!
blacknoseddace Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 Disregard shimano, got my reels mixed up. Sorry. I've always called them closed face reels. My wife used them for a while until I showed her how much better "open face" spinning reels are.
Members cerckson Posted September 1, 2014 Author Members Posted September 1, 2014 I will just get her a spinning reel. Don't want to invest to much in it though. She has a real short attention span when it comes to fishing. She's usually on her tablet. <img src="<a data-ipb='nomediaparse' href='http://i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/cerickson1978/DSCN3005_zpsdc76c1e1.jpg'>http://i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/cerickson1978/DSCN3005_zpsdc76c1e1.jpg"</a>alt="DSCN3005_zpsdc76c1e1.jpg"> Just an ole construction worker that likes to tractor pull. fishinwrench Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 Maybe if she learned to use decent equipment she'd enjoy it more ? Probably not though, as anyone who takes a book or a tablet fishing is already anticipating boredom.
