Atta Posted November 8, 2014 Posted November 8, 2014 2 weeks ago I went to table rock and the starter went out. Came out today and blew the lower unit! Did manage to catch 2 good smallies and a keeper KY.
5bites Posted November 8, 2014 Posted November 8, 2014 Eh yuck. Table rock has some of my lower unit parts too around point 7. No good.
J-Doc Posted November 8, 2014 Posted November 8, 2014 Ouch. That's way more expensive than a starter. Terrible news. Need marine repair? Send our own forum friend "fishinwrench" a message. He will treat you like family!!! I owe fishinwrench a lot of thanks. He has been a great mechanic with lots of patience!
Atta Posted November 8, 2014 Author Posted November 8, 2014 lol. Yeah Jdoc. Much more. Just replaced the alternator, seals in the steering, starter, and the battery. Might as well go for a new lower unit lol. O well. Get her do Ed and back soon
merc1997 Bo Posted November 8, 2014 Posted November 8, 2014 ouch! that hurts. 5bites, you should go around point 7, not through it unless you are idling. i have watched boaters fly across that point for many years. many make it unscathed, but a few are casualties. even being careful and just idling, it is easy to catch a stump with the prop. sometimes you just have a part failure. good time to remind those that do not, but if you fish quite a bit, it is cheap insurance to change the lower unit grease twice a year. sometimes this will allow you to catch a problem while it is a cheap fix. bo
5bites Posted November 9, 2014 Posted November 9, 2014 Thanks for the advice. I do run way way wide of point 7. I can't believe some don't actually. that's a mine field! My lower unit basically grenaded on its own. Gears hanging out of the case and everything. Best part was it was just after leaving the launch of the Superbass I was in. So I paid the entry to drive a couple miles and trolling motor back lol.
Atta Posted November 9, 2014 Author Posted November 9, 2014 Yeah. I just changed the lower unit gear oil before the first freezing temps just in case I had water in it. Oil looked great and noetak shavings. Just happens sometimes. Hope the insurance claim goes good. It will save me some money. Strange it went out without hitting anything. Shocked me a little but I'm sure it won't be the lady time I tear it up lol.
Members theduerf Posted November 9, 2014 Members Posted November 9, 2014 I couldn't believe the amount of boats I saw in October fly over point 7. That place is scary. I go way wide around that one.
Champ188 Posted November 9, 2014 Posted November 9, 2014 Hope the insurance claim goes good. It will save me some money. Strange it went out without hitting anything. How will insurance help if you didn't hit anything?
fishinwrench Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 How will insurance help if you didn't hit anything? It won't. If it blew a hole out the side of the housing then you broke a shift clutch or a pinion gear. When you changed the gearlube did you put the plug with the magnet on the top, or the bottom ? If you say "what magnet" then I think I know what caused your gear failure
