Sore Thumbs Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 Go hit the front of the lower unit with a sledge hammer a few times. That will help get it covered. Ha

Members Golf Pro Posted November 10, 2014 Members Posted November 10, 2014 Ok, I will bite. Why does it matter which plug you put where? I under stand that the magnetic plug will pull any shavings down to the plug. But is that the reason, so the shavings aren't floating around?
GNSfishing Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 It would be my guess that if there was not a magnet on either plug then it was inside the lower unit which would be the reason the gears and such busted the lower unit housing......

Bingo. And one way they get busted is by screwing them into the top vent hole. On some LU's there isn't clearance for the mag-stick on the top cavity. When you tighten the screw up it folds it over and falls into the gearcase.
merc1997 Bo Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 thanks for the great info fishinwrench. i, too have seen lower units scattered for this reason. always reverse procedure when putting things back. bo
Members Golf Pro Posted November 14, 2014 Members Posted November 14, 2014 Wow, great to know. I had no idea and have changed my LU many times.
