Jason R. Posted November 13, 2014 Author Posted November 13, 2014 And you could probably get 300.00 worth of use out of it. I wasn't trying to jack up your plan, just giving my .02 You could throw 300.00 at fixing up the Yammie and pass it down to your kids. (Maybe) Right- I understand man and I really appreciate the advise- I am new to the whole used motor market. I guess i will see what the two guys coming to look at my motor will offer for it. If it is enough to pick up another motor with fewer issues to fix I will sell it and pick up either a used 9.9 or maybe an 8- one that has a skeg and hopefully decent lower unit seals. I am pretty sure no matter what I get- using it on the Little Red, Norfork and White will jack it up. The Little Red is lower unit hell. Almost everyone there has jets- I just can't afford a jet right now. The other motor I am looking into is a Johnson 8 hp- not sure of the year- but it looks pretty good. http://flyinthesouth.com/
Plastic_worm Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 Yamaha's are great motors. I have a 1989 yamaha 115 and I love it. It's been in my family, dad and now mine, since 1992. It runs great and has required very minimal maintenance. Should probably do more but I only use it a few times during the summer. Edited (fish brain happens when I talk about boats and fishing)-My point was: For $500...I think I would keep it as a back-up. Never know when you may need it. * I have 0 mechanical skills...just user experience. Jason R. Posted November 17, 2014 Author Posted November 17, 2014 Welp... I sold it. Been looking at various other 9.9s. I figured the skeg would be at least $75 to fix, prop would be 60ish, new seals for the lower unit would be fairly pricey... so I sold it to a guy and I'm just going to get a different 9.9. I'll let yall know what I end up with. Hope I don't kick myself for selling the Yamaha. The real problem was the skeg that was ground down to almost nothing. I was afraid it was not repairable. http://flyinthesouth.com/
Plastic_worm Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 Awesome. What I meant earlier was, you should sale it asap, lol. Those yamaha's are junk. Jason R. Posted November 19, 2014 Author Posted November 19, 2014 Ended up buying a Suzuki dt 9.9 off a guy in western AR. I think it is a 1992. May be an inferior motor but this thing looks like its barely been used. It has a mint looking prop and lower unit and the lower unit oil had zero water in it. Starts and runs really well so far. I am a little worried about finding parts for it. Oh- the fuel line plug seems to be a little loose- may need to be replaced. Also the cowling looks like crap- needs to be painted. Came out of the deal 50 bucks ahead so i guess I can buy some parts with that. http://flyinthesouth.com/
