I've never quite understood the mentality of firing a coach because of a failure to win a major championship or because of a bad season. Pinkel has done a very good job with what he has to work with.

I'm sure some will be ready to replace Stoops after this year. I think Mike Stoops should go, but 2 of his losses this year came down to missed kicks by one of the best in the league and a QB who is inconsistant, but without a ready replacement. The last loss they were without 3 key offensive players, which is very unusual.

Stoops obviously shouldn't be fired...but some clearly think he is feeling the pressure. Interested to see if he bolts, with available jobs of the caliber of Michigan and Wisconsin. You have to think he'll be pursued, especially by Michigan.

Also some slight concern that Pinkel could be on Michigan's radar. Don't know if there is anything to it though. He's aleady turned them down once before Rich Rodriguez was hired.

Interesting that Bo Pelini went to an FCS. He's from Ohio though and maybe tired of the big league BS.

I don't tink OU will push Stoops, but some of the defensive games really brought Mike Stoops abilities in to question. Baylor was a good example. If you didn't see it, He pulled the DB's back and gave the receaivers a 6 and 7 cushion. Petty walked down the field just taking what he was given. You can't give an outstanding QB a flat footed receiver 7 or 8 yards down field, he won't miss.

Well, Steckel is gone, taking the Missouri State head coaching job. I would have thought he might wait for a mid-major D-1 job if he wanted to be a head coach. I'd also think he might be taking a pay cut...he made something like 600 K at Mizzou.

Kind of an odd deal. He probably could have gotten a decent FBS job after his performance this season, possibly even a major conference gig. You wonder if he just didn't want to have to change his recruiting footprint by moving out of the region. Also, you wonder if he just wants to be out of the spotlight.

I say we should give Craig Kuligowski (our d-line coach) the call-up to DC. We really, really don't want to lose him, and I think a promotion would help in that regard as well as possibly being the best available option to keep good things going.

I hope we go after Odom from Memphis although Kuligowski would be fine too. I don't think Steckel had a chance at a mid major or power 5 type team, and this was the best he could get. He is getting his first shot at 57...not sure many programs at a mid major or power 5 take a shot on a first time head coach at that age. He clearly wanted to be a head coach though....he is taking a $350,000 pay cut to do so. It seems a bit odd, but hats off to him for going after what he wanted.

I also the blowout in the two SEC championship games have something to do with it too.

Steckel said in an interview that he thought the trend was to draft younger men to head coahing positions. He said he thought at his age this was a good start for him.

Yeah it's a pay cut, a salary cut, but there will be other things that make up some of that that come with being head coach. Plus some guys are not about the money. Maybe he just wanted to give it a shot on his own.

No matter what it was I'm very happy for MSU. They need something or somebody to get them going. It's a great school with wonderful facilities. They have shown sparks of being able to play in the past few years. Hopefully this gets them going in a good direction.
