cold, wind chill reported in single digits, water temps low 30's . water level dropping, slower sections starting to ice up . line guides icing up .

only thing that would catch fish was 1/8 jig with a paddle tail fluke dragged extremely slow on the bottom . ended up with two smallmouth in 2 hours, good enough for me today.

home for a hot meal , hot shower and off to dispatch trains on the main line of mid America

what a long strange trip it's been , put a dip in your hip, a glide in your stride and come on to the mother ship , the learning never ends

I gave it a whirl yesterday evening for the last few hours of light. Caught a nice kentucky on a black rabbit jig right away and then missed several others. It was a bit windy and I set the hook on one with too much slack and it came unbuttoned after a few seconds. It felt pretty decent for what little it was on. I'm not sure if I was on small fish or my jig tails are too lng but they just didn't seem to get the bait far enough in their mouth.

For those who fish these cold temps, don't unhook your boat from the bow until the boat is in the water. I almost dumped my boat off on the ramp while backng down. Luckily, it just slowly slid back enough to dip down and set on the lower jet grate so nothing was hurt other than my pride. My bunks were solid ice so I was able yo winch it back up fairly easy and finished backing it down in to the water. My heart definitely skipped a few beats when it first happened!

I guess that is what it would be like if a guy was using those ultimate bunkboards.

Tougher than me. Fishing in single digits, and dispatching trains at night.... ouch. I am going to wait and lay off a couple trips come up that way in late May, see my son at Second City.... Wanted us to come in January....nope not happening.

well, went out today, all four places I went to were unfishable. Slack areas froze over, yea many icy, slushy piles flowing in the current. trying to present a lure thru them was next to impossible and even if you got twixt them, the line just got hung up on one of them .
