In that price range might take a look at these rods. I think Champ or someone else might have suggested the Compre and this rod is meant for spinnerbaits but I think would also double nicely for your jerkbaits. Might look around and find them cheaper because I believe Shimano is in the process of updating all of their models and going back to all cork, standard reel seats and screw lock mechanisms (so not the up-locking screw seat as in the model below) and lastly phasing out all the models that still carry the lifetime warranty. They are going to a 1 year warranty on all their rods I believe (even TOP end models) and there is NO MORE over the counter dealer exchange program. I am getting away from Shimano rods for that reason but I do like them.

I think most if not all the major rod manufacturers will stop offering a Lifetime warranty on their rods. It is too cost prohibitive for them to continue to do so. I'm not saying the consumer will see a lower price but.....

You can't go wrong with that setup for that price. I'm sure you will love it.

I do understand how costly that could be offering a lifetime warranty. That being said how many loyal Shimano customers are you losing by getting rid of the warranty and how many potential new customers are going to now shy away from that rod knowing the warranty no longer exists? To me that was a HUGE selling point for them. It would sway me to purchase a Shimano over maybe a competitors rod in the same price point. You may save money not having to fulfill warranty claims but you also aren't going to be selling as many rods. I'm sure Shimano's product managers and finance guru's worked out the #'s that is best for the company and know far more than I. But, I just can't see it being good for the company IMO. They tried to cut corners on their G series reel lineup (Citica's but mainly Curados) and that bit them right in the arse. They had to totally scrap that model after only being on the store shelves for one year. Would love to see Shimano's rod sales figures (# of rods sold and profit margins) over the next couple of years compared to previous years when they had that great warranty.

I agree in the short term Shimano is going to take a hit, although as a long term business strategy I think all rod companies will need to reconsider their warranty policies.

Its my understanding that due to govt. regulations, if a company offers a lifetime warranty that company must set aside a percentage of every sale of that product. That money must be set aside in an escrow account for potential future warranty claims.

If a company is selling a large amount of rods (Shimano, St Croix, G Loomis) I can see this being a huge financial burden. I'm sure there is some magic price point at which sales drop precipitously, so I can see some companies keeping a lifetime warranty on their highest end rods.

I know the consumer wont see a lower price but I hope a large percentage of that money Shimano is "saving" goes towards R&D, I haven't been impressed with many of their products although I hear/read their new Zodias rods are great.

Ya I truly have no idea how a company sets up their warranty program. But I don't see why you would need to have an account set up to fund claims. If you break a Shimano rod that is no longer in production they send you the new model that is it's equivalent. The cost of doing that should be built into selling each rod but like I said I'm sure their is way more to it than what I know.

Not at all tired of hearing from you, Gary. Be sure and let us know how you like that setup. I have a feeling I know the answer already but will be nice to hear you confirm.

Good suggestion, abk. The only problem with those Compre rods is they tend to break after a while about a foot down from the tip. That was no issue to me when they were swapping them out over the counter, no questions asked. Now that they're phasing that program out, I might be a little leary of buying one.

Gary, I might also suggest that you consider the Falcon BuCoo, specifically their 6-10 MH/Fast, model number BCC-5-1610. Should work very well for what you're wanting to do. Duckett Fishing has a new Ghost series of rods that would fit right into your price range, too. I absolutely love their Micro Magic rods and own 5 or 6 of them but the Ghost series is pretty new, so I can't speak to their durability, etc.

You'll find the right rod. Glad you like the Lew's reel. You made a good choice.

Champ knows I had several Compre rods break ON A CAST a foot from the tip and just as many swinging short fish. I've been taught well and know how to swing a fish, but those Compre rods just like to snap there.
