Justin Spencer Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 WIHA has really brightened things in Ks. The period between all the leasers showing up and no WIHA was a little bleak, now we just need some good weather for nesting. I do have my lifetime hunting license in Ks. and come back occasionally to chase those wily, noble and delicious pheasant. Underrated for waterfowl also with a few great public areas, and don't forget the strip pits, hell if your governor weren't a complete idiot I might move back. ness 1 "The problem with a politician’s quote on Facebook is you don’t know whether or not they really said it." –Abraham Lincoln Tales of an Ozark Campground Proprietor Dead Drift Fly Shop

Can't wait to see you down here this spring for some crappie fishin' and mushroom huntin'. Oh and by the way, my dog tells me he can't find those cacklers in missouri anymore Claybuster 1

Yeah, the 'cut taxes and watch the economy EXPLODE' experiment isn't looking too good right now. My daughter is a first year teacher, and I have a niece that works in mental health for the state. They're both seeing first hand what the cuts mean for real people. And, yeah, I've heard the waterfowl hunting is great here, I just haven't done it. The last few years I've fished strip pits on the MO side, but have access to some in KS this year. John

Al Agnew Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 Don't surrender, we all get frustrated when we think things are being managed improperly, but complaining about a government agency just to complain without backing it up is becoming all to common these days. I understand not wanting to have to get tags and licenses for everything you do, but it is much cheaper and less confusing than in many states. Look at all the deer zones in Kansas for example. The trout tag that you get is so you can keep the trout you catch, outside the trout parks if you want to release them you aren't required to buy the tag, if you want to keep trout think of it as buying the fish from the state who produced them for you to catch and release, $7 will get you a pound or two at the store so that is a pretty cheap for as many trout as you can legally take home for an entire year. The fact is there are more people in the world now and many still want to enjoy the outdoors, this leads to industries being created to accommodate these people (capitalism), sure it seems harder and harder to find "secret places" but that is because there are too many people in the world. Without MDC helping create great outdoor opportunities for the public, hunting would be reserved for the rich or for those farmers who already have land to hunt on. Much of this land would be leased to those willing to pay to have a good place to hunt like it is in Kansas where they have very little state owned land. I have worked for KDWP and can tell you that they have very little to work with and while they do the best they can, the outdoor opportunities in Kansas pale in comparison to those in Missouri, and we have MDC and the forsight of the public passing the 1/8 cent sales tax to thank for it. Yeah, if you think things are too complicated in MO, try figuring where, how, and when you can hunt for deer, and which species you can kill where and when, in Montana. It's just about driven me to drink trying to figure out about 200 different management zones with different rules for antlerless whitetails, antlered whitetails, antlerless mule deer, antlered mule deer, hermaphrodite whitetailed mulies (I'm kidding on the last one, but only the last one). I got totally different rules on my side of the road the house is on, compared to the other side of the road. I do know, from dealing with them about various issues, that the enforcement people at MDC have to sign off on every regulation change, and they often kick and scream if a reg change makes things any more complicated. It took the smallmouth biologist a long time to talk them into accepting the smallmouth special management areas. I've been in meetings with the biologists and the head enforcement guy at the time when his ONLY concern was how a change was going make things more complicated and harder to enforce. I believe the whole antlered deer regs elicited the same kind of objections from the enforcement arm. They really do try to make things as uncomplicated as possible, as evidenced by the little booklet that contains just about ALL their rules for both hunting and fishing. Again, using Montana as an example, they have a magazine size book for deer hunting, a same size book for elk hunting, same size for every other big game animal, another one for small game, and another one for fishing...and a disclaimer in every one of them says that the book doesn't cover all the rules!
