More than one person asked me which blank I used to build my Ned Rig casting rod. It was a Mudhole SJ8600-MHX blank that is designated as fast action, medium light power, 6-12 line, 1/16 to 3/8 lure, 7'2". Today I had an older Curado on it. I will switch that to my Revo MGX this week.

Sounds like a great option for folks who can't get over the spinning reel hurdle.

The 7'6" blank I like is just up from that one. It is the SJ9000. Believe both of those are meant to replicate the old Loomis "hot shot" blanks. Mine are from Jann's. They call theirs the JMX, but the specs are the same...weight, butt and tip diameter, etc. Built another for myself over the winter, with a more standard grip configuration than my big TN handle.

I made a cast with it, really throws that 1/16th out there. I don't have any bait casting rods that I would even attempt that with. Very light and sensitive, I could count the rocks in the gravel as dragged the Ned over it. I think that rod would be a hoot to catch TR bass with.

I didn't make a cast with it but I held it and checked the action against Randy's hand. Also watched him throw a 1/16-ounce Ned at least 60 feet into the wind. Wow. Perfect "fast" tip and plenty of backbone to handle a good fish. And light as a feather to boot. Very impressive.

Built a mudhole ned rod myself this winter. A 6' lite spinning. Only regret, wish it were a 6.5' and didn't come with black and gold thread. Purple, black and white with another 6" would have been better. This one will become a crappie rod. Bought a new St Croix premier for the Ned.
