bferg Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 I don't disagree with anything anyone has said here but there is a more important issue- you will NEVER be able to control other people- buy you can control wearing a PFD. (Not just "having"- actually wearing). This is even more important when you are in a small craft and especially with the cold water temperatures. I didn't always wear a PFD as much as I should- but now when the water is cold, when my boat is moving, and anytime at low light I wear one. Last year after a drowning I heard a rescuer say they had never recovered a body that was wearing a PFD. Daryk Campbell Sr 1

Last year after a drowning I heard a rescuer say they had never recovered a body that was wearing a PFD. That's a very good point. We had a saying in the construction field, "you cant fall off the ground" You definitely cant control the masses of idiots. But you can control what you are doing. Ive been debating on the suspender style Mustang life jackets. Even when I'm canoeing or kayaking
JohnF52 Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 I always wear a PFD when alone, or if water is cold or if water or boat is moving. In warm calm conditions with an able companion, I might not wear it, but have it within reach.
jolicious Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 Trophy they COULD enforce it but do not... The law says you must be responsible for your wake and if you wake another boat you are violating it. If you swamp it or cause injury it could even be a felony. They just need to sit up there and nail people. Serious question, as I have no idea: What are the parameters of that law, if you know? For example, if you are in the middle of the channel between Prairie Creek and Coppermine, and a smaller boat is on one of the points - does that count the same as if you're in the back of a cove or something? I'm really more curious than anything; as I try to steer clear of folks in smaller boats as well. I'd be happy to provide a barrier if need be as well. Don't look for a sticker, just yell "HHHHHHHHHHEEEEEEEYYYYYYYYYY JJJJJJJOOOOOOEEEEEEE!" And I'll surely turn around. I usually have peanut butter / crackers in the boat - I'd even share those :-) Daryk Campbell Sr 1
Feathers and Fins Posted March 26, 2015 Author Posted March 26, 2015 Page 38, 39 and 40 explains it and it is the law http://www.boat-ed.com/assets/pdf/handbook/ar_handbook_entire.pdf If you look at Page 39 ( Improper Speed or Distance ) 3rd paragraph it explains pretty clearly. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
jolicious Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 That's clear as mud. Let's visit about this next time we're hanging out (that's an excuse to paint more baits!). I don't want anyone to think that I'm in any way minimizing the accident by veering off topic. Dang ADD caught me again...
Members Jack Perdew Posted March 27, 2015 Members Posted March 27, 2015 I believe it is a choice to wear a PFD , just like a helmet but if you don't use them then please sign a donors card. I keep several extra PFD's in the boat and give them to kids I see playing in the water without , if only child is saved in my life time it's worth it jolicious, fisherofmen11 and J-Doc 3
