slab slinger Posted March 29, 2015 Posted March 29, 2015 Was fishing around birch branch today got confronted by MDC boat thought it was rutein license and live well chec check. Wrong. He was conducting an on water anglers SerServey. Asked guestions and wrote down answers rate todays fishing 1-10...how many fish caught...live baitor artificial...The kicker was whats your openion to lowering Spotted Bass (Kentucky) length limit to 12in. And would you keep them at that length. Not really a bass fisherman but i didnt think there were that many spots in Stockton Lake?
Sac River Jim Posted March 29, 2015 Posted March 29, 2015 we had the same survey a couple sundays ago over on the rock point between Y and H highway bridges. it was pointed out to me that only 2% of the spots they survey are 15 inches or larger and they estimate a 15'' spot to be seven years or older which is right at the end of their life cycle. He said that because there are no threadfin shad in stockton because it gets too cold in the winter it slows there growth rate way down. I talked to my county game warden a couple days later and he had heard that MDC is considering uniform length and creel limits for some species including bass state wide. he said that was the reason for the survey. It's interesting because the surveyor said most spots they shock up come from the darn area. most the spots i've caught which arent too terribly many have come off a long bluff between point 9 and the rock fence just below springfield cove.
Walcrabass Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 MDC survey persons, Thank you for telling people that a 15" spot is like finding a pearl in a can of oysters. Seven years old???? Wonder how many times one that age has spawned?? Wonder how many thousand of those short bass it has made?? Wonder how many times those offspring have crossed with Smallmouth or Largemouth??? I REALLY REALLY hope and pray the MDC DOES NOT MAKE UNIFORM LENGTHS AND CREELS STAY WITH US. I wish MDC would give the survey to myself or a person like Straw Hat. They would know without a doubt that we want the Kentuckies in their OWN CATEGORY. With their OWN LENGTH LIMIT !!! And virtually NO DAILY OR POSSESSION LIMIT !!!!. These little guys WILL TAKE OVER!!!! Look at Table Rock !!!! I seriously applaud Oklahoma for their efforts to eradicate these fish and replace them with super genetics Bass !!! I pray I will be applauding Missouri for the same very soon. In my opinion if you are asked to take this survey just answer in this way.....please fill in the blanks for me for whatever will make the largest and most prolific Bass in our lakes. If there are inferior species please make fishing regulations so we can help you make things this way. Walcrabass, again, and forever, on this particular subject.
Sac River Jim Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 The argument is people can't tell the difference between a LM and a spot but my reply to that is people have learned the difference between a white and a wiper and to me they are harder to tell apart. If you can't tell a spot from a LM just run your finger on there tongue and look for the rough patch. Case closed how easier can it be!!!
Sac River Jim Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 Walcra Bob Bennett took a guy out today and he put a 6.56lb small jaw in the boat. There's a pic of it on Stockton Lake Guide Service on Facebook.
moguy1973 Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 That's a big smallie. Not far from the record. Sac River Jim 1 -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
Sac River Jim Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 That's a big smallie. Not far from the record. less than a half a pound from the state record.
Walcrabass Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 Sac River Jim and others, There really is no argument as to identification. We have four easy ways to do this. Jaw hinge is under the eye, Dorsal fin really has no definite break in it between front and rear lobe, tooth patch on tongue, and of course the fact that they have rough scales hence some people calling them "Carp". Come on MDC, help us to make our lake fisheries better. Walcrabass
Flysmallie Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 There are a lot of spots in Stockton. Maybe not as many as Table Rock, but still a bunch. I see no reason to leave them at 15 inches with the others.
5bites Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 Using the kentuckys on table rock isn't the best argument. Also in not sure why the thing about threadfins not being in Stockton keeps being repeated. I've had fish puke them all over my front deck at Stockton multiple times.
