mhowerton
Making plans for a float next weekend and just checked the gauge. There's no way this is right is it?
budman
We are planning a trip in about a week also and I have been watching the gage height and it has been rapidly going for the last several days. Not that much rain in the area. Is something wrong with it or did some unknown darn break and start flooding the area(joke). In the last four hours it has gone up another 6 inches and over 8 feet in the last week. Would love to see CC if it is correct but would never try floating or fishing it. budman
If it keeps going up and you don't get any locals to give you an update you can call the Fred Berry Center Tuesday at 870-449-3485.
joeD
Yes, it is correct. The area around Yellville keeps getting pounded with rain. The ground is saturated. So, any additional rain goes straight into the creek, via Georges Creek, and Turkey Creek and Clear creek. I wouldn't float above 12 ft at Kelly. Just as important, is the CFS. Anything above 400 is asking for trouble. I fished the White River the last week in January this year. Bull Shoals was very low due to lack of rain. Very dry conditions. A month later, Bull Shoals is over pool and keeps getting more water. Point being, the gauges are correct. CC falls quickly, but not recently though. Caution is advised. Members Finley
I was up there Saturday and I was shocked to check the gauge Saturday morning and it was almost at 17 ft. so when I finished the day I drove down to the slab to look and it was about a foot over the slab but not brown at all. Big creek was pretty and green when we passed in the morning but brown on the way home. The Buffalo at Carver was muddy all day so the rain must have just been in spots. joeD
Trust the gauges. At Kelly, water above probably had not passed through. Not worth messing with it. Wait until everything calms down.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted April 20, 2015 Root Admin Share Posted April 20, 2015 The graph does look suspect... 6 days and not drop, no leveling off at all? That means nonstop rain every day and that hasn't happened. Not saying it NOT high from rain but it just doesn't look right. Hopefully you'll get someone who drives over the creek to report. budman
Had talked to the lady at the Fred Berry Center this morning and she said the creek looked a little up but no was was it 11 feet over the low water bridge. So the gage is not correct. If fact she said the creek was really clear and looking nice today and that she wished she didn't have to work today so she could float. The USGS gage went from 23.05 feet and flowing 26,200 CFS at 1230 to 12.32 feet flowing 568 CFS at 1300. She said that should be the correct reading according to the way it looked when she crossed the bridge to get to work this morning. Hope it stays that way when we are there next week. mhowerton
I just saw that gage correction also. Still think it is a little high for fishing this weekend. Going to go to the White and trout fish.
Amery
So it's a no go for wade fishing on the crooked Creek this weekend? Even on the upper end?
