brittsnbirds Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 Thinking about heading down to Montauk the week of 5/13. Looked online at reserving a CG, however only 1 was available for the time we are going to stay. Can anyone give me an idea about how likely the First come sites will be full on a Wednesday? I know at Bennett CG 5 (First Come) usually will have an opening this early in the season. Just wondered if Montauk was the same way? Any suggestions.
Gavin Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 You should have plenty to choose from. Have a great trip.
jdmidwest Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 You should be fine on Wednesday, the park usually only maxes out on weekends. The reservables are almost always booked months in advance. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
brittsnbirds Posted May 9, 2015 Author Posted May 9, 2015 Thanks guys. We are trying to branch out from the norm. My wife likes the "feel" of Montauk. Reminds her of our trip to Idaho years ago. I have to agree with her. Thanks again.
jdmidwest Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 It is a nice place if you get to experience it without the weekend crowds. Drive over to Licking and eat at Olig's BBQ if you like that kind of thing one night. There are many antiques from Licking to Houston along the main road. Several in Salem also. Unless you want to fish and camp all of the time. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
brittsnbirds Posted May 9, 2015 Author Posted May 9, 2015 Well jd you definitely struck a nerve with us as BBQ is one of our fav's. Actually mine is pretty darn good but for the two of us I don't fool with it much any more. Will try it!
jdmidwest Posted May 10, 2015 Posted May 10, 2015 I have spent alot of time in the area over the years. Many times involved rain events that kept me off the river parts of the day to most of the trip. It is a place that you can get out and explore. Drive down river and see Devils Well sometime. Fish the river below the park. Run over and hit the Little Piney or Lane Spring. Take a float on the Current or Piney. Lots of Geocaches in the area if you like that. Montauk makes a good base camp, it is a nice campground for the most part. Lots of things to do there. Trout fishing is not bad either. Fish size has improved for the better too. They just need a good steady rain for about a month every Tuesday to get it back to normal. Give me a yell if you want some pointers on good spots at Montauk.

jdmidwest Posted May 12, 2015 Posted May 12, 2015 Plenty o skunks. Coons will rob you blind too if you don't secure the cooler. Dang thing about the campground, dogs are allowed. Bunches of city dogs that bark at other dogs, owls, strange noises, and skunks. Some get nailed, you can smell it the next morning. If something is scratching at your tent, don't bother to get up and look. It is either a skunk, coon, or armadillo. I always make it a habit to dump some food garbage a few sites over from mine in the woods, keeps the critters away.
