I float from hootentown to Kerr every year. The first 3 or 4 miles is the best fishing in my opinion. Did real good on that stretch last hear throwing dark green bitsy tubes. Caught a lot of goggle eye on purple and pink jigs. Good luck. Let us know how you do. And be careful. If a riffle looks dangerous, bank the boat and walk.

That I will. Last week when I went I hit something in the water and one of my poles got caught up in a tree root and well broke my pole

Did hooten to blunks last year and it was all pretty decent fishing. It was middle of July. We did 3 days 2 nights. And everyday was decent fishing.

Gravel bars below the High water mark are good to go.

Still doesn't mean you won't be harassed by the surrounding land owner though.

I have floated and camped the James river for 20+ years and never had a problem finding a spot to camp, and never had a problem with a land owner.

I don't remember ever having a problem with any landowner on any river while camping. Had one on the Eleven Point come down and check on us one night but I think he just wanted to hang around the campfire.
