8 oz cream cheese

2 pie crusts (the premade ones in the refrigerated section)

bacon grease from about 6 slices of bacon

food coloring

I was searching for a good non-floating dough bait and couldn't find one I was satisfied with so I came up with this. It's a combination of a couple of different recipes I found on the internet. I'm going to Meramec Springs tomorrow and will report back if it's successful.

Unwrap both crusts and mix in bowl with cream cheese. I started with one crust and half of the cream cheese, adding to the consistency I liked as I went. I ended up using all the ingredients save for a small amount of crust.

Once you mix the crust and cheese together, add the bacon grease and knead again with your hands. This is a messy job. If you have any pets, they'll be glad to clean your fingers ;)

Next, add the food coloring and if the consistency is too sticky, add more dough. I used a large salad tossing fork to mix the mess into a nice salmon colored concoction until it was dough like enough to work with my hands. Refrigerate and you'll have a nice big ball of bait. I separated it into four ziplocs. One for myself, one for the wife and I'll likely put two in the freezer for future use.

I plan to suspend this dough bait on a jighead hook about 3 ft from a bobber using light line (4lb or nylon monofilament thread).

Good luck!

Interesting concoction. Add some chicken blood, squished up livers, and some cattail fiber and it would make a great dip bait for catfish!

I haven't fished the "Springs" in many, many years. While you are on natural bait I have to ask if anybody still uses the old standard.....Velveeta cheese. In my loathsome 40 or 50 years ago a #14 treble hook embeded in a tiny ball of Velveeta, and a small split shot 18" up the line ruled!

Velveeta still works. There was a day last year where the trout were being very finicky and I had to work to scratch out a limit. My father in law wasn't doing very well and found a wad of Velveeta layingo on the ground near him. He decided to put a pinch of that on to replace the 007 he had been using. He landed three trout shortly after. We always have Velveeta at the house, but I never seem to remember to take any with me when i go down there. As expensive at it is and how much I like it, I'm still not sure if it's worth using on trout. :XD:

Many years ago some friends of mine down af clearwater used to fish for carp and turn them into delicious fish paddies that were frozen and distributed to the poor. I can remember many times when we loaed a boat with large carp. All we ever used was feed corn. We drilled a small hole in it for the hook and soaked them in cool aid. I cannot even begin to estimate how many carp we would catch. I partly taught my 6 yr old son how to fight fish by giving him a light spinning rod with a 6 lb test on it to catch these things on. those carp taught him some valuable lessons about landing fish that are with him to this day.

I don't consider myself a purist but I have not been able to go with cheese or hotdogs (Vienna sausages), etc. as a trout bait. Maybe I will break down one day. Let's face it velveeta is as processed as any of the packaged dough baits that I do use.

I tried a version of this recipe a couple of weeks ago, but with brown and serve biscuits instead of the pie crust. Just couldn't seem to get it right. When it was refrigerated it was fine but once the bait warmed the cream cheese just made it really sticky and it fell apart on me.... Hopefully you aren't quite as inept as I am at making bait ?

Maybe like catfish dip bait, try some corn star h, or maybe cattail fiber to thicken it, and help stay on the hook.

OR

Just buy some Berkley Gulp Garlic eggs!
