Members Kdub Posted June 14, 2015 Members Posted June 14, 2015 Night fished Maze Creek last night and trolled flickers this morning. Set up on timber in 25-30 fow. 6 keeper Crappie, 16" Walleye and a few no good, line tangling, light snagging White Bass. Just can't seem to really get on the fish, but its still going to be a good meal! Still have not done real well trolling, not sure what I'm doing wrong. Was a good trip with the wife! Water was mid to upper 70's. Sorry no pics. Sac River Jim 1
slab slinger Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 Kdub...What's your speed when trolling? Another questions is what depth are you running cranks in? Just trying to help you out.
Members Kdub Posted June 16, 2015 Author Members Posted June 16, 2015 I don't know exactly how fast I'm going. I usually set the trolling motor on 3 or 4 depending on the wind. This is a question I have asked before. I see other people say exactly how fast they are going and don't know how they come up with it. I've been going just fast enough that I can see the action of the lure in the rod tips. I'm using 10 & 12 lb mono line and I followed the S. bank from Cedar Ridge to Maze Creek. I stayed mostly around 20' fow because we caught a Crappie right away at that depth. Thanks for the response any help is much appreciated.
Members Kdub Posted June 16, 2015 Author Members Posted June 16, 2015 I've considered trying an app. on my phone but haven't.
wuteversbitin424 Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 Ive used and app before...they work ok but i would just use it for a little bit to get familuare with how fast your going. The apps drain your battery quite a bit
Dutch Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 If you have a gps/sonar you can get speed over ground and tell exactly how fast you are going.
Ketchup Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 I guess "trolling" with a trolling motor makes sense, but most use their outboard motor, clicked into forward, and no faster. Weve done good lately in 6' to 14' of water. Maybe try a little shallower, depending on the time of day, cloud cover, etc. TinBoats BassClub. Â An aluminum only bass club. The apps drain your battery quite a bit Use the app to get a speed then take not of where the RPMs are on the boat. Then you won't have to worry about draining your phone. wuteversbitin424 1
Members Kdub Posted June 16, 2015 Author Members Posted June 16, 2015 Thank you everyone! Ketchup, I wondered if people were using trolling motor or gas motor. I'm new to all of this. I've only had a boat about 2 months. I'm learning and have gathered almost everything I know from this forum. I really do appreciate all the info. Dutch, I've got a friend that can get some good deals on Lowrance electronics but have to wait until July. Ketchup, I've got the dive curve for 7cm Flickers. How deep should I run them? Just above bottom or should I try different depths with several. Right now my wife and I are using two rods a piece.
LoweSTX175 Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 I have a Lowrance Elite 7. It has a chartplotter with sonar and downscan. I had mine mounted onto a "ram mount" onto the console. I troll with my main motor. The chartplotter will tell you exactly where you are and been on the water. It comes in handy when making exact passes or in some cases moving simply 3 feet farther out. As far as getting the exact speed the Lowrance gets you pretty close. I can run as low as 1 mph if i tweak with my trim. Typically I run at 1.5-2 mph when using cranks. I personally don't like using the "trolling motor" on my boat. It's too much work and I like my cup holder by my steering wheel.
