yaknar Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 I've been fishing a couple times since my last post, but until now I didn't have much too say. But Friday changed that....With the river up and rolling, I told my wife my goal was to catch one fish. The river report for Friday: no debri, trash or trees across the river, a couple of new tree parallel to the bank. I finally found the smallmouths. I caught almost all of them on deep diving crankbaits, 5 to 8 feet. I did use swallow diving and started catching goggle-eyes again. The pattern was cranking and long pauses. As a bonus I caught 3 cats. One cat was caught on a long pause because I was swatting at a horsefly buzzing around my head with my hat. When I started reeling again I had a catfish. And as you can see by the last picture ..Dougie and I have each got a double this year. I got rained on pretty hard the last 30 min but what a great day on the river.....as always too may pictures, didn't take pictures of all of them but released them all to fight another day.... Dougie 1
MOPanfisher Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 Catching smallies and a few channels for supper if you choose, dang fine way to spend a day.
Members riverhyker Posted June 28, 2015 Members Posted June 28, 2015 FANTASTIC CATCH.....It has really been an abnormal year with all of the rainfall we have gotten. I would have normally been doing river fishing at this point (temps between 80 - 85. I would have normally been out at least 12 to 20 days at this point and have only been out twice. I really worried or wondered if they were shut down or flushed out of the holes I normally find them in.....OH....and THANKS for returning them....our local waters have some ultra light reel screaming sized smallmouth, but I have always been afraid to speak about it because of people that have no respect for the time it takes to get there. I watched a guy and his family with a tent set up on the Finley River under the 160 bridge and he had a 5 gallon bucket. He was fishing with his kids (GREAT thing), but he and was keeping EVERY SMALLMOUTH HE CAUGHT ABOVE 5 INCHES.....not just just ignorant, but he was teaching his children this. My best fishing partner is coming for back for 2 weeks from Oregon tomorrow. I started walking the rivers with him when he and his brother were 7 and 9 along with some of their friends. He is exactly like me...His Dad....MO just wasn't enough of the outdoors for him so he moved to Oregon....and I lost my best friend....didn't/couldn't say anything to him about his moving on...we do what is best for our children and if this is what he needed to do I was going to support it. (I also let him figure out how great the Ozarks is...We are from OH originally and moved them here because I had a dream about what was going to happen to our hometown of Steubenville OH). Yaknar, Thanks for the pics....we will be floating the Niangua with the in-laws on Weds. and then my son and I will be floating the Buffalo (weather permitting)...for 3 days of fishing and camping since there is no private property issues. I haven't been able to find a fishing partner since he left where we gelled and I was raised to be very respectful of other people. Thanks for letting us know that they weren't completely blown out....and for "Throwing them back bigger".
Members Dougie Posted June 28, 2015 Members Posted June 28, 2015 Looks like a great day Yaknar! Thanks for the report and as always the wonderful pics and sharing your day with us. Congratulations on the double Great Job!
yaknar Posted June 29, 2015 Author Posted June 29, 2015 Lvn2Fish, I floated down to Shelvin. I forgot to mention the float usually takes me 7 hours to float, I fish slow, float slow, and wade often. But Friday it took me 4 1/2 hours to float this section.
slab slinger Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 Nice fish. I 2 float/fish the James quite often. It's 2 close not to and offers some great fishing (at times). I floated Shelvin to Hooten Saturday and the fishing was tough for me. River was fast but fishable water clarity was ok. Caught some nice small bass on my hand tied hair jigs but not a dang goggle eye one. I was wanting a few gog's for supper but came up empty. I do keep a few goggle eyes from time to time but release all Smallies. They are the kings of the river IMO and take so long to grow to any size it's not worth killing them to me. I enjoy everyone's posts/pics on the page and keep them comming. Beautiful fish. Nice job. What cranks are y'all using if don't mind sharing. I can't get fish to hit them for me. Maybe all me. I'm mainly a bottom dragger jigs, craws, and creature baits.
jbooth24 Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 I.just use a ned rig and rebel crawldad and catch alot of smallmouth and googeleye. But that's also on the lower end near galena
yaknar Posted June 30, 2015 Author Posted June 30, 2015 Slab slinger, I have 3 go to crankbaits a Rapala, a KVD, and a Savage Gear.
