Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted February 6, 2007 Author Root Admin Share Posted February 6, 2007 While fishing with Gabe Cross a couple of years ago below the Norfork Dam, he had Randy Waggoner, a friend who was on the trip with me, use a san juan under an indicator 8-9 feet deep, large indicator and split shot to keep it down, and he fished it real close to the boat. Guides on the White tend to run their motors all the time, I'm sure to keep the boat in line to where they want to drift- instead of a trolling motor. I'd think this would spook fish- a trolling motor is bad enough. But Randy was successful at catching fish... but not half as successful as I was throwing a white jig. shawncat Posted February 6, 2007 Share Posted February 6, 2007 Nice fish Phil.I also fished the White this weekend.Started Sat.p.m at the white hole wading and picked up dinner[12-14"]All on power eggs 10 fish or so.Boated the White down by steamboat with some nice browns[16-18"] on rapalas fishing tight to the bluffs close to the banks Sun.p.m.Monday was a little different started wading BSSP early a.m. cathing some nice browns on air injected crawlers with one going 18" when I looked up and the state was stocking 12-13" rainbows out of their truck and pontoon.My bud was already thowing a clown roostertail and it was'nt long before I had on blk. roostertail and we were catching them every other cast.Later on in the p.m. we drifted shad on river rigs from the state park to below cane with notta.So we started thowing rogues,x-raps,rapalas,and picked up some nice browns and bows[15-18"].I caught a nice 21"brown on a rebel minnow under a log that went 4-5 lps. to cap off the trip.That lure was bought at the last minute in the bargain bin at wal-mart for $3 I did'nt need it but a little voice told me I had to have it and I'm sure glad I did. I wanted to fly-fish but like Bill B. said drifting next to the boat cane pole style does'nt grab me.I also like to cast,present.If your heading down post and I'll post some colors,sizes. Members fish4life Posted February 7, 2007 Members Share Posted February 7, 2007 I am a new guy on this forum. I am also making my first trip to the white the weekend of the15th 16th and 17th. Do you think we could fish out of a 17ft aluminum boat with a 35 horse. I am concerned with the depth of the water with the v-bottom of this particular boat. Sure would appreciate any advice on the water situation. Already have plenty of white jigs. Thanks for confirming what I just bought at Bass Pro. Thase were some great trout. I only can hope for something like those. Did really well on the jacks fork and one other smallie spot last year. Can't wait to wet the line. Tooki my son twice this year already. RiverRunner Posted February 8, 2007 Share Posted February 8, 2007 I would think that you would be OK with that rig on most of the White with the current generation patterns, but that could change. I would probably avoid the Norfork with that boat. There are some spots on that river that hard to navigate with a 20' glass jonboat even when they are running full bore, and would be impossible with a v-hull. If they start running less water at BS, you should have plenty of water in the White below the Norfork confluence, where there are fewer navigation hazards.
