Members Troutguy Posted July 19, 2015 Members Posted July 19, 2015 I can't find a used Shawnee, and simply can't afford a new one at this time. Thinking about building one out of marine plywood and cypress lumber, that I have plenty of. A 48" wide x 16' boat would be perfect in the milder rivers that I fish. Add a set of oar locks and wooden oars to guide it in moving water and go fishing. Plenty of dry storage and an ice chest would be nice too. It wouldn't be fiberglass, but I'm getting old and it probably would outlast me anyway. Ideas?
jtram Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 I have thought about doing something similar, if you build it start a build thread, I'd like to see it done. Consider an 18, never hurts to have 2 more foot.
Old plug Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 It would be awful heavy and it just might startle you with what it will cost you ultimately.
Members Troutguy Posted July 19, 2015 Author Members Posted July 19, 2015 A little $$$ every week sounds way better that thousands upfront. I have all the lumber to build it anyway. Will need some extra's, of course. jtram 1
kjackson Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 try bateau2.com for some guidance. They don't have a Shawnee clone, but the GF16 is relatively close. Daryk Campbell Sr 1
Members Troutguy Posted July 20, 2015 Author Members Posted July 20, 2015 I have the measurements needed to build the boat. I want to add some rocker to the bottom for river running too.
Gavin Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 Buddy has built a couple cedar strip canoes. Another has built some wood and canvas boats. A Jon would be much cheaper.
Members Troutguy Posted July 20, 2015 Author Members Posted July 20, 2015 The cedar strip canoe's are way more than I can handle. Those guys are real talented. Another boat that I really want to build is like the Hyde Rocky Mountain Skiff, a RO skiff or an Adipose skiff. Those wide fly fishing boats will float in just a little water. I plan to have one ready for fall fishing.
Gavin Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 Drifter would be a couple hundy more than a Jon. But similar construction.
