Sharps4590 Posted September 17, 2015 Posted September 17, 2015 Welcome to the "benign addiction". You have taken several steps on what often proves to be a slipper slope....but an absolutely wonderful slope. Sort of like a favorite blue or balck run in the Rockies when skiing. I upgraded from synthetic rods and plastic line to bamboo and silk. No regrets and nothing synthetic has been fished with in over a decade but, take it from experience, think long and hard before you take that step. Smallie Seeker Posted September 17, 2015 Author Posted September 17, 2015 Oh how steep the slope slides. My RLS+ somehow made its way back to Cabela's, and I somehow managed to find myself on the side of Manchester rd test casting multiple rods with a beer in hand last Friday night at T. Hargrove's. Came home with a St. Croix Imperial. Already thinking about what my next rod/weight will be. imperial.htm Lancer09 and David Unnerstall 2
Fishingmill Posted September 17, 2015 Posted September 17, 2015 Smallie Seeker, The addiction only gets worse from here. I'm on a fly line kick right now. Got two new lines coming in the mail and I'm getting a new pair of waders this Friday. Lancer09 1 instagram.com/fishingmill twitter.com/Fishingmill vimeo.com/fishingmill
Smallie Seeker Posted September 21, 2015 Author Posted September 21, 2015 Gear fishing at Mark Twain was a good change of pace last Sunday, but all I could think about was fly fishing. Specifically trout. Brown trout. Current river brown trout. I've fished the park several times but never explored any further than the first hole past the wire at Montauk. I've never caught a brown. After speaking with a veteran fly tier at Reeds, he suggested some streamers and that I spend the afternoon sighting for browns, then come back to fish at dusk when they're more active. I put in at Baptist around 2pm, loaded up the kayak and headed upstream. Didn't fish. Found 3 holes that had browns holding tight to the bank. Set up camp on a gravel bar and headed back downstream to the first hole an hour before sundown. Saw the same nice brown tucked next to bank cover and after several passes with no interest the fish started upstream. Casted upstream ahead and gave a few strips and my #8 olive streamer got nailed. 16" fat and healthy. Ended up catching another 14" brown later that evening. Spent the night on the gravel bar. Hooked up but lost another brown today on the way out. Caught a good number of rainbows both days as well. I'm quickly becoming hooked on the Current! Thinking Taney 2 weekends from now. At this rate i'm going to need to start saving for next summer steelhead fishing on the Deschutes! Greasy B 1
Sharps4590 Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 Good on you seeker!!!!! I believe you're going to like that Imperial. I bought one....goodness....18-20 years ago? I know it was before we moved to Wyoming in 2000. Sure caught a pile of cutts on that rod. For a few years it was my go to rod. I'd rather live my entire life, living as if there is a God and Jesus and to find out at the end that there isn't, than to live my entire life as if there is no God and Jesus and to find out at the end that there is.
Members westbranchfly Posted December 9, 2015 Members Posted December 9, 2015 Your next rod needs to be a 5wt. St Croix imperial switch rod. Get an OPST skagit head that will cast on both rods and be done with overhead casting. Overhead casting sucks. Dig out the 7' heddon fiberglass, spool it with double taper and learn to roll cast. Problem solved.
