Bill B. Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 How secure are boats left permanently at marinas? I am thinking about buying a used aluminum boat/motor and leasing a slip by the year at a Truman marina. When I leave the boat unattended, how safe will it be? Should I remove the depth finder and trolling motor, etc., every time I leave? Can I insure the boat, motor and contents against theft?
MOPanfisher Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 Most marinas are fairly secure, however there is the occasional rash of theft from boats. Generally they will take the fast easy to grab stuff, rods, reels, etc. I would definitely take the depthfinder off and either lock it in the boat somewhere. Batteries are another frequent flyer for thefts at times. I suspect you can buy insurance but have no idea the cost.
Nitroman Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 Yes you can insure it for whatever level you would like just remember your level of coverage will determine your premium. I would say a " BIG YES " to remove all that you can each & every time !!!!!!! I have fished all across the USA & CANADA for over 40 years & the only " TIMES " I had a problem was on 2 different trips to TRUMAN. One time a rod & reel was stolen out of my boat as it sat in a slip overnight @ BUCKSAW MARINA & one time my boat ( & ANOTHER GENTLEMENS ) were stolen out of a slip @ OSAGE BLUFF MARINA !!!!!!! Got the rod & reel back & the thief ( A MARINA EMPLOYEE ) was arrested & taken off to jail by the local SHERIFF, his employer filed charges against him so I did not have to. Got my boat back also, but, lost all my rods - reels - tackle - personal property etc. that was in the boat. My insurance company ( STATE FARM @ THAT TIME ) covered the $ 20,000.00 bill ( ALL REPLACEMENT COST WAS COVERED BY MY HOME OWNERS POLICY UNDER THE PERSONAL PROPERTY SECTION AS MOST BOAT INSURANCE POLICIES NORMALLY COVER THE BOAT - MOTOR - TRAILER & NOT YOURS OR OTHERS PERSONAL PROPERTY ) to replace everything. Still the time & trouble you go through it is not worth it. One final thought, TRUMAN for years & years has been notorious for this type of activity & is by far the worst for these types of problems. Bill B. Posted September 14, 2015 Author Posted September 14, 2015 I've been reading horror stories about marina theft at Truman for years, and I've really been reluctant to get a boat and put it there. Are things any better on the LOZ side of the dam? At the Old Oar House?
fishinwrench Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 Anything from Proctor cr. on up might be a tad sketchy. (Winters Bone) I wouldn't worry too much about the boat....but wheels/tires, small outboards and anything small enough to be carried..... I'd worry about.
Gavin Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 Don't leave anything portable with value anywhere. It will be gone. Minor criminals prowl for easy pickings everywhere.
rainbow Posted September 16, 2015 Posted September 16, 2015 Whenever we visit Truman I park my boat at Truman State Park marina. I remove all fishing gear and electronics. I have not had a problem with theft and I see rods left in boats overnight all the time. The only problem I have had at that marina is from storm damage to my boat. That place is a magnet for storms.
