BilletHead Posted September 30, 2015 Posted September 30, 2015 Big grilling pan. I like to grill outside and do so often. Various thin sliced meats and veggies. Sometimes my grill pan is way too small. I like doing large batches and overflows happen. My pan I have had for years is 11" across and 3" deep. I have looked online and cannot find larger ones. So a plan was hatched to make my own. I took my current pan to welding shop to a friend for guidance. Yes I can make you one but have you thought of a big wok? Duh why did I not think of that? Back on the internet for research. Lets see we can get all sizes, made of hammered steel, carbon steel, stainless steel, flat bottom, round botton etc. All I need is a cheapo. Then there are various ways of seasoning them when new. So yesterday in Springfield we hit an Asian market where we wok shopped. Well I did as the Mrs. thinks sometimes I am way out there. So I settle on a 14" that is almost 5" deep. Round bottom so I bought a wok ring. Wok 19.95, ring 4.95. Today I set the wok on the ring and took a level to level it up. Put in a little water and center was found so I center punched me a divot. Then took a compass and from center made me five circles an inch apart. Then approx. an inch apart center punched me more marks. Drilled all marks with a 7/16" bit from inside of wok leaving burrs on underside. Then used an angle grinder with a flap disk to get rid of drill burrs. Then finer sandpaper smoothing inside and out. So now seasoning, Put the wok in the gas grill and heated up to around 450 more or less to give it a good burn. Removed and give it a coat of goose oil and back into the gas grill to work its magic. Grilled a onion in big chunks until crispy brown. (Said to do this to remove any metal taste? ) Removed and cleaned and coated again with olive oil. I am happy with the results of my Holy Wok. Now have to try it! jdmidwest Posted October 1, 2015 Posted October 1, 2015 I love cooking on a Wok, but they are way overpriced. I can get pretty good performance out of a good teflon skillet. I have never tried a holey wok like you have, I like to cook food in juices. Looks like it may leak thru yours. BilletHead Posted October 1, 2015 Author Posted October 1, 2015 it's all about the charcoal flavor with this wok JD. I can make fajitas that drip with juices out of your tortilla. You won't be using this on your home stove. Terrierman Posted October 1, 2015 Posted October 1, 2015 I've got a largish stainless grilling device that looks a lot like that. Love it.
Flysmallie Posted October 1, 2015 Posted October 1, 2015 Nice work there Marty! I've been wanting to get a wok for my grill for awhile but always wanted something cast iron. Might have to check into something like that since it's a whole lot cheaper, but I rarely ever use a pan that's not cast iron.
BilletHead Posted October 1, 2015 Author Posted October 1, 2015 Yes Ronnie cast iron is the bomb! We have some really nice cast iron skillets that were my grandmas and older than she was. In this case cheap works well, BilletHead "We have met the enemy and it is us", Pogo If you compete with your fellow anglers, you become their competitor, If you help them you become their friend" Lefty Kreh " Never display your knowledge, you only share it" Lefty Kreh "Eat more bass and there will be more room for walleye to grow!"
