Gary Lange Posted February 14, 2007 Posted February 14, 2007 Have you ever thought of writing a book on your early days of fishing the Rock. I bet it would be interesting to say the least. Respect your Environment and others right to use it!
Members fullmoon Posted February 14, 2007 Members Posted February 14, 2007 Here's an interesting fact about TB in '64 and '65 I used to see freshwater jellyfish back in the west branch of Mill Creek (near campbell point). Also back in the east branch there was a tree 50 or 60 feet out in the lake that had a flying squirrel living in a hole in it and early in the morning you would go by and it would come out and go to the top of the tree and glide to the bank. I guess my best two days of catching keepers either '92 or '93 (not sure of the year). It was 2 days before Thanksgiving and the lake was up in the grass and so were the bass. A friend from Cassville met me at Campbell P. and i asked if he had a fishing report. He said a few were being caught on spinnerbaits but it was slow. We fished the right hand bank of the first cove past White Oak for about an hour and caught 1 keeper. We fired up and headed for Big Creek and as we're passinng 20 point i see all this grass in the water on the flat. Well I can't go by without giving it a shot and they were there. I love waking a spinnerbait with colorado blades and having it disappear in a boil. We caught abot 40 bass between 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 lbs with 1 that went 4 1/2 and about a dozen shorts. Thats was a very good day but i liked the next day better. I fished alone in the rain and had 11 keepers by 1 pm with 2 5s and a 6 1/2. But the really amazing part was i never saw another boat the whole time.
bassman1308 Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 fullmoon: nice to see someone on here thats been fishing longer than me.lol. i don't know how current you are with him but frank mulick lived at green shores near viola for several years. he had been injured in a serious auto accident before moving here and hadn't fished for a whil. last i heard, he had moved to north ark. like i mentioned on here earlier, he was truly a character. a real diehard fisherman. frank got off work in kc at noon fridays, drove from kc, fished ALL weekend, and drive back to kc on sunday to his job, hence the 46 hours fishing without sleep. he still caught more lunkers than the most of the full time guides. i never fished with him but he did give me a tour of his 'hot spots'. he had some awesome fish stories. i think chuck marshall is still alive. i know his son, jay, lives in purdy and still fishes.

SKMO Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 Here's an interesting fact about TB in '64 and '65 I used to see freshwater jellyfish back in the west branch of Mill Creek (near campbell point). I would bet what you were seeing was bryozoans. They are still here., more frequent in some years than others, and always in the dingy water up the Kings or James, I have never seen them in the clear water main lake. http://www.bio.umass.edu/biology/conn.river/bryozoa.html Flying squirrels on the lake I definitely believe. I grew up fishing a lake in So IL where we caught crappie and shot squirrels out of the boat a mile from shore. Tell us some more early TR stories, otherwise I will abduct you in the parking lot some day and you will have to put up with my BS. SKMO PS: I Just Noticed I am a Channel Catfish. How wonderful to have moved up into a catagory above bait. Most of the species I have been in the past were bottom dwellers and my goal is to be a Smallmouth Bass. There is no higher calling than to be a smallmouth and I guess I ahve several posts to go. Bill Babler Posted February 16, 2007 Posted February 16, 2007 At least your not a Gizzard Shad. I guess I am part of the forage base and that is probably better than I deserve. http://whiteriveroutfitters.com http://whiteriverlodgebb.com
Members fullmoon Posted February 16, 2007 Members Posted February 16, 2007 SKMO- i hope to move up the marine food chain myself. Sorry SKMO but they were not bryozoans if u ever see them you will know. Check this site http://www.jellyfish.iup.edu/US.html and click distribution then click Missouri. They were dime size and almost clear. When I saw them there was a group of maybe 50. The site i listed does say they have been sited in T. R. in 2005 and 2006 which makes me feel better that they haven't wiped out by pollution. One story while i'm here. A July night in 1975 Mulich and McCarty had just started fishing at dark onthe south point of campbell cove. They were a ways out from shore in about 30 feet of water when another boat starts idling out of the cove. The boat goes by only about 60 ft. away which doesn't thrill Frank at all. It gets even better a few seconds later when something hits the boat and a hellbender jumps in the boat and snags one of his rods. Frank does manage to catch the rod before it goes in the lake which probably saved the guys life. The guy stops and Frank is on the trolling telling him what he thinks of him, gender and birth right, and trying to get in his boat and kick his ***. Luckly McCarty holds him back and the guy takes off. I still laugh because Mulich is such a banty rooster (like when Donald Duck would get mad).
Bittle Posted February 16, 2007 Posted February 16, 2007 I grew up on the lake my whole life until I moved to St. Louis for college. One summer I worked on Indian Point boat dock. I was working one day and noticed a small group of these in the water. I sat and watched them for about 20 minutes. They were about the size of a contact lense and in a group of about 7-8. I told the guy at the floating cafe about them and he called me crazy. So I caught one in a cup and took it to him. He was amazed but was reluctant to pay me the money I bet him that tablerock lake had freshwater jellyfish. I only saw them for about 1 week and it was only a few at a time. Its the only time I have ever seen them on the lake. I tell people about it and they still think I'm crazy. Bittle
