Dan the fisherman Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 So as u all know, I've been after striper the last few weeks with nothing to show.... I have this old 6 foot cast net, and decide to learn to use it. I'm mean I've thrown it around here and there but never to acutaly to catch bait. I've been using brooder minnow for striper fishing and they were not producing so I decided to try to catch bait. Let me tell ya it's a lot harder than I thought and its a lot hard to throw a cast net off the boat. After a couple of weeks of practice I've managed to get good enough to get a doze or dozen and a half when I go after shad. I've been using shad the last couple of days and it seems to be paying off. Landed this striper today and had one come off yesterday.. Btw water temp was 63 today. Green236, Lance34, Vinsott and 2 others 5
nomolites Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 It's one of those things that gets much easier once you get the hang of it; hard to beat live shad for stripes. Nicely done. Mike Dan the fisherman 1
Stump bumper Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 One thing I have learned about throwing a cast net is to take the front seat of the deck first.lol Nice fish
Dan the fisherman Posted November 14, 2015 Author Posted November 14, 2015 Went out again yesterday and got 1 small striper. Was right at 21in. On a shad again. Not much action but it was a beautiful day out there and was worth the 9 hrs of tolling. Water temp was 63
Champ188 Posted November 14, 2015 Posted November 14, 2015 Man, you guys are some kind of dedicated to those stripers. Nine hours of trolling for one fish?
Dan the fisherman Posted November 14, 2015 Author Posted November 14, 2015 I would have been happy with none with the weather being so nice. Lance34 and Hammer time 2
Vinsott Posted November 15, 2015 Posted November 15, 2015 Good job Dan. Have been off the water for my son's wedding out of town. Will try to get out again soon. I am a total novice at this striper fishing but the lake caught shad to me seems to be the ticket. I just need to get a better cast net so I'm not so tired after throwing the net for an hour and getting lucky eventually with some shad in the net.
Dan the fisherman Posted November 15, 2015 Author Posted November 15, 2015 Vinsott, this is the first time using shad but, I've had a lot of success with brooder minnows the last 4 years. I'm not totally sure why I haven't been able to get a bite as of late. Here's one thing though. The brooder bite gets strong when it's colder, well at least from my experience. If it takes shad this year I guess I'll be getting real good with the net lol. Also Vinsott, I practice throwing net in back yard for 20 mins or so a day till I got the hang of it. Now sneeking up on them is a whole other ball game lol
