...wanted to beat BilletHead to the garden thread this year. :D I guess technically the 2016 garden started in October when I planted garlic.

The catalogs are rolling in, and I start thinking about the garden this time of year. I'll inventory my seeds and see what I need to pitch. I'll review my notes from previous years and start to plan my garden for this year. Then get the new seed ordered and begin starting things in the basement in January.

I've been gardening in the same location in the current yard since 2002. During those 13 years the trees have grown to where I'm getting shaded more than I want. By mid-June the northernmost beds are in shade by late afternoon now. I've also got tall trees to the south and west, so the sweet spot in my yard is small and shrinking. Gonna have to decide what I want to do and get on it!

I have similar shading problems.  I'm investing in a chainsaw.  I enjoyed last year's thread and plan to participate in this year's.

I wish I had more time more than I wish I had more money.

Ness, you dirty raskel.  Beat me to it! Well done.

Yes seed catalogs here too. Gosh so much to pick from. Are the offending trees in the neighbors yards? Go ahead and reach across the fence as far as you can and cut away. It will be alright and you can tell them I said it was OK. You have the right to your portion of the sun :). Did you get a catalog from Territorial Seed Company? Your sungold cherry tomatoes are in there. Will be trying some of them this season. Their lettuce varieties are mind boggling. Speaking of greens I still have uncovered lettuce growing. Bet that will change with it going to get in the teens after tonight.

By all means podum join right in. Love to have your input,

Yeah, I get Territorial seed catalog.

What's the variety of grilling pepper you grow. Marconi?

          Cubanelles! They are great.

Also see they have those fermentation crocks like you have. Pricey things. I would like to try that sometime. Do you have horseradish in your garden? Need any roots? I got mine dug and made some and have bookoos  roots in the crisper in the fridge. Want any this Spring? Anyone else? I overwintered mine last season in there since I had mine growing in tubs and replanted in the Spring.

This is the crock I bought. Not as expensive as the German ones I had seen.

I did a quick read on horseradish -- you plant it in the spring and dig the root. Can get pretty invasive if you don't get it all though. Maybe best a container? Yes, I'd take some off your hands.

For the last several years I've done a 'pre-sprout' on some seeds. Wet paper towel, sprinkle on seeds, put in baggie and label it. Lay them on heat mats. Hard to germinate seeds, like peppers, really, benefit from this. Did this yesterday -- I've already got a tomato sprouted. Anybody else do this?

Neat way to do this John. Never have tried but may this go around. We just ordered yesterday.  Have some fall Lettuce seed left and plan on getting some started this week. When weather starts to stabilize I will get horseradish roots in the mail. They might as well rest in my crisper and keep yours free for all that good cooking you do up there. We had a fat mallard grilled yesterday:)

Nice John!

Still waiting for seed to make it to the house. They may be in the mail box. Got to check. Did plant some of last year lettuce seed yesterday in trays. So do you go from this stage right into starting trays or wait another day or two?
