Gavin Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 Ditch the tent if you can. Will leave it in the truck if above freezing and no rain or snow in the forecast. . A tarp, full length Thermarest, and a good bag is all you need. Dry clothes before bed, hat, and an empty plastic jug for when nature calls needed when below freezing.

Gavin Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 Bug spray or a tent...Bugs aren't usually bad if you camp on a gravel bar but it can get ugly if your back in the woods.
Al Agnew Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 One of the few times I disagree with Gavin...as long as you have the room for it, I want the tent. And I want a four person tent even if I'm by myself. It doesn't take up much more room than the two person or one person tent, and it gives you more and easier storage of all your stuff that you don't want to get wet in rain or heavy dew. And though bugs aren't usually much of a problem on gravel bars, there are usually a few mosquitos in hot weather. I have a very low tolerance for skeeters humming around my head.

Just guessing that Gavin could probably hang with Bear Grylls. I don't mind roughing it but I don't function well with little or no rest. I can't sleep with skeeters.
jdmidwest Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 I usually run into a good rope swing on alot of my floats. Tie off the hammock to the tree and the rope and camp over water of the night. Fall out of bed into a refreshing bath to start the morning. Foghorn 1 "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson

For that matter neither would a car door/window. If they want in they are coming in. I'd be more concerned with wild hogs than I would black bears. Every black bear I've ever seen was headed in the opposite direction as fast as he could go.
