I'm actually building a 6' one piece boo rod right now. 2 wt. Gonna be one of my blue ribbon small stream rods.

A Phillipson is one blue collar rod I have yet to add to my accumulation.  A friend has one and I cast it and liked it.  I can't imaging any Boyd being wrong!!!  Winter and spring of 2015 I wrapped a 6' 6", 3-4 wt., Tufts & Batson blank and it's a sweety too!

I'd rather live my entire life, living as if there is a God and Jesus and to find out at the end that there isn't, than to live my entire life as if there is no God and Jesus and to find out at the end that there is.

Phillipsons are pretty nice. Like the 8.5' Dry Fly Special allot. Have a 6'9" boo 3wt that I like allot. Digere ICPH taper. Been 8-9 years since I've made a bamboo rod. Post some pics of your build.

I love my Phillipson Fly Fox 6'6"!!! it's rated a 6wt but i use a 5 sometimes as well.  One of my favorites for the current or smallie fishing.

I'll definitely post some pics!!! finally finished applying finish to the blank.  I used tru oil and have done like 12 coats sanding between each.  I probably could have kept going but finally told myself enough is enough!!! it looks fine!!  Not to mention my wife said "you still working on that same darn rod"?  HAHA. Yes dear...  I just glued on a bamboo reel seat slide ring and cap.  Gonna work on the cork this week.

Curiosity killed the husband, but how much would one of those bad boys cost me to take off your hands?

Gavin, I fear the pictures depict my usual "not very good" photography skills but, here it is.  The rod is a two tip but I only had the one finished when I took that photo.

That is some choice wrap work, Sharps!  What kind of bone is your thread burnisher? Or is it antler?

Posted

Well thank you very much!  Were my photography skills better you might not say that....lol!  It's deer antler sw but I don't burnish with it, I use it to push the wraps tight together.  I filed a little flat tip where the point is.  That's silk and if you burnish it, it gets all fuzzy.  At least it did on me the one time I tried it so maybe I don't know how to burnish silk.  Silk is all I've ever wrapped with so it's entirely possible I don't know how to burnish anything....

On a few of the wraps evidently I didn't get the tag ends cut close enough and when I varnished them there was an itty  bitty bump there.  It doesn't "hurt" anything but it annoys the crap out of me.  I thought they were all fine.  When we were in St. Louis for my wife's radiation treatments we went by Tufts & Batson one day and Amelia, I think that's her name, told me how to correct that on my next one.

Love the colors. Kinda like an Edwards I owned years ago. That thread bump is no big deal. Shave it off with a razor blade w/o cutting the wrap and add another coat of varnish. Half hour worth of work tops. Hope your wife made it through, and is in the clear. Radiation treatments can be rough.
