I wouldn't float over 6 miles if you are fishing

The answer may not lie at the bottom of a glass, but you should always check

Yeah it's not a bad spot. You don't need a 4wd to get in but you are going to need one to get out.

10 miles per day is a bunch on this river and way too much at the current flows if you want to spend a good amount of time fishing.

I've pinned this topic for future reference.

If anyone would like to expound on descriptions, I'll create an article so that people won't have to ask these questions again.

Excellent info - thanks!

Hey Bob, Hootentown to marble grounds or mud bank as some people call it  is just a shade over 6 miles.  You do not need four-wheel-drive, but you will have to pull your kayak up the bank. It's not straight up and my wife is able to pull her kayak up fairly easily. Access it via McCall bridge Road. We fish it fairly often  and are usually off the water by two or three in the afternoon, having started around daylight. Will be floating it Saturday.

Hootentown to Kerr is close to 19 miles and is an overnighter, but in my opinion the best overnighter on the river. There are some great places to camp along the way

On a side note, Hootentown canoe rental will shuttle your vehicle to either place for $20. I use them all the time and it's money well spent not to have to either burden, or rely upon someone else to make sure your car  is there when you get out.

One thing I know for certain; this time of year, if you have to float the weekend, going down from Hootentown is the only way to go. Most of the people I run into down there doing exactly what we're doing: Fishing

Does anyone know what would be the Gage Height and Discharge values for a normal flow say from Hootentown to Galina?

Also, I've attached a PDF file with some maps defining float sections using the information you all provided.  There are four sections mapped with ranges of  6.3, 7.5, 2.9, and 4.9 miles.

Let me know what you think. With a normal flow, how much time do you think it would take to float Section 2 (see the attachment).

Also, with a normal flow, how much dragging would one encounter and in what sections?

The median CFS is around 500 for this time of the year at Galena. Right now at Galena it's at 315 cfs. I've floated when it's over 1,000 and I've floated when it's 80. The closer to 400 it is the less you will drag. But all of these sections are different. And all of them are constantly changing. What I remember from last year doesn't mean squat this year.

Hootentown to Goff Creek (mud bank) (section2 JR access 2 ) ,carry boat up or down ,or Goff Creek to Horse Creek (Kerr's) are good one day fishing/floats . The river changes a lot year to year . This year however I haven't made it above Goff Creek yet waters been too low to get the boat up past there . The lower end Goff Creek to Horse Creek wasn't bad 4 weeks ago only hit hard once put a hole in the boat ,not the first and won't be the last ,haha. Ive put in at Horse Creek 3 times this year so far and ran up far fishing not as good as years past but some of the good holes have filled in .

Put in at Hootentown but Prices Shoal ,second red dot section 1 (about a mile below Hootentown ,) didn't look to good , the gravel shoot on the north side had filed in so you have to go in the rocky part . So we ran up almost to Shelven Rock did fair .

Last week I took a day off to take dad fishing we had to put in at Blunks ((Caraway) ran up to the railroad bridge below Cox . That end we catfish ,don't like it as well as Smallmouth and Goggle Eye but spent another day with dad so was a Great day . Unless you like paddling I wouldn't do the end ,lake backwater .

This year I need 5 1/2 feet gauge height at Galena to make it all the way don't know cfm's .
