Members BIG K Posted July 29, 2016 Members Posted July 29, 2016 having just sent the state water patrol a 137 dollars for not displaying my lights at 10: 30 in the morning in front of lilleys i got online and studied the navagation light laws and it states that non powerd vessels under 23 foot so this includes kayaks paddle boards etc. must display a lantern or light device of some type in darkness fog or rain and poor visiblty conditions. i have yet to see this from any of the kayak rentals in the area. i think the water patrol officers need to go to the source and refresh them on these laws. crappie_adams83 1

I think it would also be good if they displayed a flag during good light similar to the ones we are required on our ATV's in the offroad parks. Even better would be a small strobe light. Not as much of a problem with brightly colored kayaks, and vests, but some of them are much more earth tone colors, and easily blend in with the surroundings. Not on a collision course, but I was supprised by just such a kayak one day when all that caught my attention at first was the flash of his paddle in the water. Real men go propless!
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted July 31, 2016 Root Admin Posted July 31, 2016 Next time we see a MHP guy down here we're going to ask why kayaks aren't included in the all-round light requirement. May be it's just motored boated? Don't know. But if I had a kayak biz I'd put lights on them. I guess the white strobe lights I put on my jons made them legal... I didn't know about the rule when I bought them. I bought them because we thought it would be smart... just took 30 years to grow that brain.
