I wonder when this law was put into effect...i went into a local pawn shop with my son and we looked at guns and i walked out with my new gun and my son was standing there with me when i bought it, this was last summer.

I know everything about nothing and know nothing about everything!

Never ran across that problem. But the ATF is about to be disbanded and the FBI will take over their duties.

I know and understand what a straw purchase is but cannot see how being at the same counter with your wife, who is purchasing a firearm for herself would be anywhere close to a straw purchase.  The only way it could even be construed as close would be if Stawhat were a prohibited purchaser.   Strawhat, do you have any idea what the rule number or anything was, I have got to see this one in print.

A “straw purchase” occurs when the actual buyer of a firearm uses another person, a “straw purchaser,” to execute the paperwork necessary to purchase a firearm from a federally licensed firearms dealer (FFL).1 A straw purchaser is a person with a clean background who purchases firearms specifically on behalf of a person prohibited from purchasing a firearm because he or she is a convicted felon, domestic violence misdemeanants, juvenile, mentally ill individual or other federally or state-defined prohibited person.2 The straw purchaser violates federal law by making a false statement to the FFL about a material fact by lying on ATF Form 4473 (the firearm transaction record) or presenting false identification in connection with the purchase.3

No idea on the rule number. They were just concerned that the gun was for me and not her. They never asked me ANY questions, just explained their concern and the adios amigo.  I did notice that people shopping together at Bass Pro had no problem until it came time for the purchase then the 'extra' parties were asked to leave. Strange.

I would think that if both persons check out with good backgrounds it shouldn't be an issue.

No background check was performed on either of us. We didn't get that far.

I would simply go window shopping if I were to be "helping" someone pick out a firearm.  This is still odd to me because I always get input from the guys behind the counter.  Also the person who actually purchases the weapon is the lawful owner.  I've never purchase a firearm from Academy and probably won't now if that is how you are being treated.

They said that the buyer asking questions from the salesman is fine but not any other person in the immediate area during the purchasing process.

This happened to us a good 2 or 3 years ago.

Just to pass along a related issue.

As many of you know my health has been getting worse over the last 5 to 10 years.

Currently I suffer from...

Non-Alcoholic Fatty Pancreas

Atrial tachycardia

Atrial Fibrillation

Hypertriglyceridemia

H2 radiation overexposure

Leucopenia

Hypothyroidism

Enlarged left atrium

Hypocalcemia

Hypermagnesia

and of course because of all this and being a Vietnam Vet I also suffer from Clinical Anxiety.

Because of the anxiety issue I can not purchase a weapon. I can assure you that with my health I certainly pose no risk to anyone. lol I am also aware of at least two married women (I am sure ex-wives by now) that were in abusive relationships and because of this they were in therapy for anxiety and even though there had been threats by their husbands (both husbands were under restraining orders) the wives were denied a weapon purchase because of the anxiety they were treated for. Nothing like a battered house wife who can't by a gun for protection.

Just venting.

Well I am never complaining about my ailments again.  OK, assuming they knew yiu and or knew you were a "prohibited person" or whatever the terminology is, I can see the concern that it might look like a straw purchase in the making.  I probably would have been a jerk and and asked if I was banned from basketball or buying shoes too.
