edyer Posted March 15, 2017 Posted March 15, 2017 I'm pretty sure that no more than three hooks/jigs can be on an Umbrella Rig in Missouri waters, but how many wires can be used? I have used three wire rigs and five wire rigs with two dummy(hookless) baits, but I know some people in Michigan use 7 and 8 wire rigs. In Michigan, you can legally use 6 hooks/jigs on a rig, and dummies on any wires over 6. Are there any particular kinds or brands that would be your favorite to use?
WeekendWarrior Posted March 15, 2017 Posted March 15, 2017 Someone can correct me if I am wrong but I believe you can have as many wires as you want but only 3 hooks. I use the 5 wire Yum flash mob jr. With the little willow leaf blades. Wish their middle wire were an inch or two longer though. fishinwrench and dtrs5kprs 2

I rarely throw it, but if I do I tie on about a 6" piece of 20lb test and have the center bait hang back from the group, and also use a bigger bait than the rest.

Since I've seen guys throw two 5-wire rigs hooked together I'm sure you are right. I'm a recent convert to the rig but I don't think you'll do any better with more wires and dummies. Seems to me that the trigger is a manageable group of shad separated from the massive densely packed school of baitfish. So I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that any more than 5 plus a few spinner blades is doing more harm than good.
edyer Posted March 16, 2017 Author Posted March 16, 2017 Does anyone know if there is something in writing stating what is legal? There have been some new designs made that have 7 and 8 wires, but only put swim jigs on three of the wires.I'm thinking of making some similar to those if they are legal in Missouri. It can get pretty expensive if you loose them on a tree!
edyer Posted March 16, 2017 Author Posted March 16, 2017 ALABAMA RIG REGULATIONS VIOLATIONS? REPORT THEM >> The Alabama, umbrella and similar rigs may be fished in Missouri so long as they use only three lures or baits. The remaining attachment points can include similar baits so long as their hooks have been removed or other hook-less attractors such as spinner blades are used. This rig is intended to be fished using a rod and reel. The Alabama rigs we have seen have more than three wires and attachment points. These rigs may be used but only with up to three hooks. (Each bait or lure counts as a hook.) The additional wires and attachment points can be used. However, whatever is attached may not include a hook. You may also clip the extra wires and attachment points off or not use them at all.
fishinwrench Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 Here ya go, Ed https://mdc.mo.gov/newsroom/only-three-hooked-lures-allowed-alabama-rigs-missouri Put 3 Shad Raps on it ! ? Just kidding, I don't think you can do that.
edyer Posted March 16, 2017 Author Posted March 16, 2017 Looks to me that as long as you only ave three jigs/hooks, you can have as many wires as you want. Fish24/7 1
