These days, 6'6" to 6'8". In my Louisiana days, I would have said 6'. Need longer casts here, but sometimes I'd like more accuracy than is easy with a 7 footer.

i also used to think 1/2 oz was a heavy SB, but you have to remember that down there 10 foot is DEEP water.

Look at the specs for the 6'8" Cara Medium Heavy Mod. Fast rod here: http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Falcon_Cara_T7_Split_Grip_Casting_Rods/descpage-FCCSG.html

Based on this rod, I would suggest a full grip, not split grip, as balance trumps weight. I would also suggest a spiral wrap micro. Look at this blank: http://www.mudhole.com/MHX-HM-MB783-MHX-High-ModulusMag-Bass-Rod-Blank. With a handle and Recoil TI guides and tip the costs are just under $200. Let me know when you are ready.

Sounds like an awesome stick RPS, but i have to point out that the blank on that Falcon has a significantly more moderate taper than the Loomis MBR-783 that I'm guessing the mudhole blank you mentioned is modeled on.

The Falcon is more similar to a popping rod kind of action. It's closer to a PR-845, although it's honestly right between the two, which is where the magic in it is for me. I don't know how Ham feels about grips, but on this rod I really like the split grip, because it's balanced with a slightly tip down balance point, which is how I retrieve a spinnerbait, and also helps with the way it feels with a roll cast.

I don't mean to nitpick, or criticize, because it's a truly awesome offer, and the pics I've seen of your work really make me want to learn how to wrap rods. I'm just talking about the finer points of what makes that rod my favorite spinnerbait rod of all time, and maybe giving a little food for thought as to what you might want to incorporate for Ham.

Valid discussion points. Let me share my thinking. First, the full handle makes power casts easier -> your bottom hand grabs a full blank. Second, a light tip (the product of a pommel weight) makes tip down, up, or medium easy. Third, MHX blanks are fantastic, but they are just a hair soft.

My suggestion is based on those points.

BTW, do you want to make a rod or two together? I am no guru, but what I do know is easily shared. I am no expert, but I made my first rod before graphite blanks were available. By my my today standards, it sucked. However, I caught a 15 pound striper on it below Keystone dam outside of Tulsa. From what I have learned, I am surprised it survived the battle.

I've thought very hard about trying to build my own rod. Right now I don't have time for another hobby, but I appreciate the offer. How much does the basic stuff to get started cost?

Let me guess Dave,

you happen to have just what I need, barely used, and that's the special deal price?

Lol

Nope. I have all the stuff I need, some of which would make purists cringe. But the sticks fish when they are done.

Guides seem like something I can handle, reel seats seem like a great way to screw up a bunch of fairly expensive parts...

Not really. Jann's has a very useful guide that covers average taper on rod butts. Pretty easy to dial in the right diameter using it. Buy a little tight, ream to fit. Lean on graphite arbors, which save weight and can be sanded to fit.

Premade cork grips generally fit well. Making your own isn't all that hard. Just have to get over the fear of shaping those.

Guides have the benefit of being adjustable until you put the finish on them. I'm not into fancy wraps. Give me a complimentary solid color and I'm happy.
