jpb2187 Posted April 17, 2017 Author Posted April 17, 2017 Tested her out on the water Friday... worked like a charm. Very happy with the outcome. Just had to reapply some silicone sealant after the trip to some of the cuts, but overall I coudn't be happier with how it turned out. Bass Yakker, Daryk Campbell Sr and Haris122 3
Pat Magee Posted April 18, 2017 Posted April 18, 2017 Beware of corrosion on those electrical connections. That seems to be the downfall of some of these DIY trolling motor / lighting projects. I am always amazed at how much condensation occurs on the inside of the kayak even though it is water tight. I guess the cooler water and the warmer air inside of the kayak makes it happen pretty quickly. I always have to dump about a 1/2 gallon of water out after a long trip. Looks great though! How did those foot controls work out for you?
jpb2187 Posted April 18, 2017 Author Posted April 18, 2017 Yes, I've got them lathered up in grease, but will probably need to reapply to be safe somewhat regularly. Foot controls worked well. I think they actually turned easier/more smoothly when I was out on the water than when I was testing them on land.
Pat Magee Posted April 18, 2017 Posted April 18, 2017 Regarding the foot controls, I would love to see how that works. I am assuming there is an additional hinged pedal on top of the normal foot rest that allows you to control how much you want the boat to turn? I am also curious why you decided to pick the trolling motor you did? I am considering adding one to mine and I am completely overwhelmed at all of the different options.
jpb2187 Posted April 18, 2017 Author Posted April 18, 2017 Mine are just sliding pedals. I cut off the piece that locks the foot pedal in place so it can slide back and forth. As for the trolling motor, I just picked up a used Minn Kota Endura Max 40lb on Craiglist for $40. I had one already, but I wanted to keep that one as is, since I use it on a jon boat and out at Busch Wildlife. I would recommend the Max over the C2 due to the better battery life. Also, I would recommend trying to find a newer version of the max that has the variable speed control. I think even the lowest speed setting on the fixed speed controls can be too fast at times. If your in STL, you're welcome to take a look at it. Pat Magee 1
Moswimb8slinger Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 The my knowledge from researching the subject for a Facebook thread. You only have to register it if it's gas powered. Electric motors/ man powered craft under 16ft were exempt. But I would consult a licensing office to double check.
