I want to pick your brains about which length, action, tip, etc. Also,  what is minimum pound test line you guys will use, and what weight jig head do you prefer? I'm excluding spinning rods for this question because I know many use a spinning rod too.

More times than not I'm going over a cable and under a walkway, so I want a rod and line that can handle the job of wrestling a fish out.   For me it's a 6'6" or 7'3" med/hvy with 20# co-poly.

If I'm letting the jig fall to the bottom and the bites are coming on the initial drop then I want the 6'6",  but if I'm swimming it I like the 7'3".

For whatever reason I can detect bites on the drop and react quicker with the shorter stick.  And when you're shooting a bait back into tight places the heavier line is easier to manage (doesn't tend to backlash as bad when you miscalculate a bit).

My jigs are always 1/2oz. or more (the actual weight is 7/16) and the shape of the head is irrelevant, I can shoot a football head or Arkie style head just as easy as the ones with flat bottoms designed for shooting.

I like a 6' 10" rod med heavy with a soft tip for skipping docks and cover. If I go longer I lose accuracy because I tend to lift up more on the rod on the sidearm skip due to the angle of a longer rod. A shorter rod is easier to control in those tighter places for me. I use 12 or 15 lb fluro depending on the conditions

7'3" Falcon Cara Amistad (Heavy Action Rod)

15-20 lb line

1/2 oz jig/jighead

Dialing your reel in and practice is the biggest key after that

Been asked before and you can get a wide array of answers but for me it is the loomis mbr844 glx which is a 7 foot heavy with fast tip combined with an old chronarch 50 mg filled with 17 to 20 lb test fluoro. I either sling a 1/2 oz. or a 3/4 oz jig, that big ol 3/4 oz goes a long way back there and gets bites from fish that are not feeding but a reaction bite in that shallow water. I like my reel to be almost free spool with just a tad of tension and just use the thumb for slowing/stopping the revolution of spool.

Sorrh Mitch but I am getting to old for skipping with bait casting. I just do not to seem to have the delecate touch in the thumb anymore so I am one of the spinning rod folks now.

No worries Harry! We need to go fishing sometime!

Well yes we do. I think I skip better with my 7 ft spinning rod and 20lb braid anyway
