Centurytel has ran been running new fiber in front on the house, some guys out spicing it together last week. Who knows when , if or how much new service is gonna cost, on twisted-copper 10mb service now, so it's slow.

However, the antiquated phone lines from the late 50's that carry the Internet to the homes in my area from the "office" limit the max speed to 10 Mbps and, in my case, because of the distance involved, just 8 Mbps. 

Found out the hard way that the older homes with the common two-wire phone lines inside them do not do well at even just 8 Mbps.  A very helpful Tech from Centurywhatever did what he termed a "home run" from the telephone access box mounted on the exterior of the home directly to my Modem and used Cat5 wire to do it.  That made a big difference in continuity of the connection/signal but could not increase the speed.  

That's why I put the IF in the post. I've already done much like you and have the internet on a separate line, that had a better sn ratio, set up by the tech.
