176champion Posted March 30, 2018 Posted March 30, 2018 Anyone ever build a spiral wrap rod also known as a acid rod, just got my new MHX 8 foot MH rod and thinking about doing a acid rod. Jeff Maberry 1 I know everything about nothing and know nothing about everything! Bruce Philips

Then they started calling it a "Whalen wrap". Now it's Acid rod? Hard to keep up with this. I had a few many moons ago, they were a real basturd to pull out of a rod box.
176champion Posted March 31, 2018 Author Posted March 31, 2018 I like the aspect of it since this is going to be a crankbait rod and it relieves the twisting torque of the rod and i don't have no rod box, lol Yea funny how the name gets changed on stuff.. I have single foot eyes except for the 2 eyes down by reel and was just wondering if single foot eyes would work.. I know everything about nothing and know nothing about everything! Bruce Philips
fishinwrench Posted March 31, 2018 Posted March 31, 2018 You want the first couple-three guides to be good and sturdy, because they are gonna grab ahold of everything you get close to. Single foots after that is fine.
timinmo Posted March 31, 2018 Posted March 31, 2018 If you would like advise from people who build lots of rods go to "rodbuilding.org"
Al Agnew Posted March 31, 2018 Posted March 31, 2018 I've had spiral wrapped rods before, and have to say I don't see enough of an advantage to them to make it worthwhile. I never noticed any real difference in performance or anything else.

There is another Gentleman that's new on there asking about spiral wrap also and they not saying much. I also know google is my friend but just thought i would ask here also. Gavin Posted March 31, 2018 Posted March 31, 2018 Folks have been doing goofy wraps on rods since they were invented. More wraps and epoxy just adds weight and takes more time. Can't see any benefit. Would rather spend my time fishing v wrapping.
timinmo Posted March 31, 2018 Posted March 31, 2018 Yeah Champ they are not necessarily real forth coming. Often they advise to search the archives. You might try messaging directly to Tom Kirkman who owns the site. Another resource is Otterods who is a custom builder in Mn. Both those people are believes of spiral wraps. I am kind of not convinced, but I also don't see a negative. As someone who repairs alot of rods I love rod boxes in boats. Oh the guy at Otterods name is Matt but I can't think of his last name right now.
Bushbeater Posted April 1, 2018 Posted April 1, 2018 I read a article in the Rod builders Library about the benefits. They sold me and I'm planning on trying one. Maybe not epoxy it all up till I've fished it a bit, if I don't like it just rewrap. Wrapping doesn't take that much time.
