midge, scud and other fly questions

When midge fishing, are these always fished as a dropper off a jig?  Or you guys fish a double midge pattern or even just a single midge pattern? 

When scud fishing, do you fish the scud on the bottom or really close to the bottom?  Is this fished solo or do you double it up with another scud or midge or something of the sort up above it?

Besides a scud and a midge what are other flies that are good for fishing with an indictor or used as a jig dropper?  Trying to get a Taney fly fishing kit put together. 

How and when do you fish egg flies, san juan worms and mega worms?  I'm assuming water flowing and with weight added, maybe even a drift rig of sorts for the egg flies?

Been doing well stripping cracklebacks and soft hackles the last few days.  Need either some current and/or chop on the water.  I haven't thrown them but woolies should work too.  They've been wanting to chase.

Scud/midge combo rig - scud on the bottom always.  Or if you're fishing a soft hackle over a scud, fish the soft hackle on the bottom and swing it.

I like current when fishing a san juan.  The Mega...  I haven't no opinion really.  I haven't done well using it but others have.

Favorite double midge is Primrose and Pearl and a blood worm dropper. 

Really like scud with a soft hackle, like Phil said. That is probably my favorite. I like just stripping the soft hackle, too. Use an indicator and a BB1 or BB2 weight, depending on current. Need them close to the bottom/on the bottom.

I am a fan of the Megaworms in current, at any time, but you can use it with no current. I usually just let it drift, bouncing along the bottom. They'll eat it mid-sink, but I have a lot pick them up off the bottom. 

I also have pine squirrels ready to strip at a given moment.

i got the spinning rod goodies but trying to get some fly goodies ready for next month.  sounds like i need to look at hackles huh?

so what would a guy throw on a fly rod in a boat with say 2 or 3 units running?  I see guides and people doing that in the trophy area around ramp using fly rods as they drift along.  a lot of times it seems with an indicator.  What is good in that scenario for a fly rod?

I normally cast those all up and across or down and across or straight up stream into a pocket, with the exceptions of the mega worm and the egg patterns and those (if I find one) I give to a spin fisher.

 

Oh and with a fly rod in a boat I would use live bait. Live bait is the only way I know to fish from a boat and enjoy it.

Well I'll be fishing from a boat 100% of the time. I should of prefaced my questions that way.  I'll make sure to bring plenty of minnows and worms then.

I throw single midge rigs all the time, particularly when the water is off.  I like the size 18 ruby 2, rusty brown & copper, black & copper, and primrose & pearl.  I tie them with a tungsten bead so they don't need extra weight.  If the water is running you could try a 2 midge dropper rig with a size 16 and size 18.

I also like soft hackles.  I keep them in the same colors as my favorite midge patterns.

If I'm fishing from a boat and they're running water I am usually throwing a weighted wooly-bugger.

I figured you would, but that is talent I don't have, boats are transport only to me. have fun!

Drifting in a boat with a unit or more running, I usually use an egg pattern with some sort of dropper about 18 inches below it. Various color scuds and midge patterns in size 16 to 12 work well depending on conditions. Try different patterns and colors until you find what they like. Sometimes it changes by the hour. Use a strike indicator and enough split shot to keep you ticking the bottom. Also, try to get a good drag free drift without dragging your strike indicator. We also did pretty well on white or peach micro jigs last week.
